Director Jimmy Henderson’s new actioner, The Prey, is now on par for the course as we enter a new year of festivals and market updates. As such, the production has paired up with Toronto-based Raven Banner for international sales ahead of EFM which launches on February 7 in Berlin. Actor and martial artist Gu Shang Wei makes his return to the screen since handing out a pretty fair performance in the 2016 action drama, Bloody Destiny. Undoubtedly and as of the film’s premieres at BFI in the UK and at Busan in South Korea late last year, this ought to be an ample segue for him onto the world stage. Director David Giancola’s riproaring new sci-fi, Axcellerator, is revving up its world premiere at The Paramount Theater on Friday, January 25 before heading out to the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival on February 9. Described as a cross between Back To The Future and James Bond, the film centers on a car thief who stumbles onto a teleportation device and the girl of his dreams. Mita Norifusa’s 2015 Weekly Young Magazine publication is now the subject of Returner, Parasyte and Parasyte 2 helmer Yamazaki Takashi’s newest epic, The Great War Of Archemides. The first official teaser is up and running host to a sampler highlighting actor Suda Masaki (Gintama, Wilderness), a math prodigy who, along with a young naval officer, uncovers a conspiracy regarding the construction of Japanese warships before the onset of World War 2. We also have our first official poster making the rounds courtesy of Toho who will be releasing the film in Japan on July 26. Also starring are actress Hamabe Minami, and actors Emoto Tasuku Emoto and Kobayashi Katsuya, with an ensemble of thesps listing actors Tachi Hiroshi, Konihata Fumiyo, Kunimura Jun, Hashizume Isao and Tanaka Min.

Long since proving his mettle in the last several MCU movies, Tom Holland is officially back once again per the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and I’m no comic book buff so between this and Infinity War, I’m all but lost. It does help to know that this film will kick off Phase Four of Marvel’s sprawling, decade-old cinematic universe, but I’ll leave the rest to the pros to figure out. You’re forgiven if you’re inclined to feel a bit intrigued about the idea of repopularizing real-life tales of horror in cinema not too distant in between. It even fascinated film critic Peter Debruge in his Variety review of director Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai which, in large part, is aimed at erecting a tale of humanity and heroism in the face of evil. Highlighting an era in which movies like United ’93 and Steven Spielberg’s Munich are tethered to draw more focus on the success of terroristic plots compared to the heyday glory of guys like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sean Connery, he makes a pretty good point. Much to stunt professional and prolific showrunner Ben Bray’s credit, the premiere of his feature debut at last year’s exiting installment of the Los Angeles Film Festival for El Chicano would be one for the history books. Injudiciously, there are some festivals whose curators remained recalitrant on showcasing a latin superhero film as much as Bray insists that it’s more than a generic crime thriller set in the barrio. For all intents and purposes this week, he’ll be making that case with a premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival in California on Tuesday at 7:30pm and on Wednesday at 4:00pm. KINGDOM: Don’t Miss The Second Trailer For The New Netflix Action Horror Series

Just in time for the new year, Netflix unveiled a new official trailer for the upcoming six-part series, Kingdom. The show is set to premiere on January 25 and despite all comparisons to Kim Sung-hoon’s Rampant, should likely serve something a little extra, if not different, what with a second season in the works for its narrative. In a kingdom defeated by corruption and famine, a mysterious rumor of the king’s death spreads, as does a strange plague that renders the infected immune to death and hungry for flesh. The crown prince, fallen victim to a conspiracy, sets out on a journey to unveil the evil scheme and save his people. Dark Figure Of Crime star Ju Ji-hoon leads the cast along with Bae Doo-na of Sense8 and Cloud Atlas fame, and Psychokinesis star Ryoo Seung-ryong lead cast among the roster in recently-unveiled character posters.
