NEZURA 1964 Teaser And Poster: Giant Rat Problems Plague A Doomed Kaiju Film Production About Giant Rat Problems
If you’re a fan of Kaiju film lore, feast your eyes on the poster for Nezura 1964, which is opening in Japan this December from 3Y Co., Ltd. JP.
Hiroto Yokokawa (The Great Buddha Arrival) is directing and producing the upcoming dramatic biopic from a script he wrote with Kensaku Sakai. The film centers on the imminent demise of the Hitchcock-inspired Kaiju feature film by then-Daiei Motion Picture Company, who wanted to develop a property to compete with rivaling studio Toho in the wake of its successes with Godzilla.
Sci-Fi Japan‘s own extenuating coverage elucidates the ill-fated production as one rife with health and safety problems when a decision was made to use real rats on set per the story: “a movie about a swarm of rats, mutated to giant size by a new experimental food product, running amuck in Tokyo”.
Long story short, the film evidently shut down, leaving room for Noriaki Yuasa’s own 1965 monster venture, Gamera, to take over and find its footing. Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co., Ltd. acquired Daiei in 2002 to form Kadokawa Pictures, which would go on to tackle The Great Yokai War, Gamera The Brave and 2010 series Daimajin Kanon.
Nezura 1964 enlists Yukijirō Hotaru, Masanori Kikuzawa, Kazuma Yoneyama, Himawari Ono, Ippei Osako, Yoshirō Uchida, and as of this week, cult favorite, actress, singer and pro-wrestling legend, Mach Fumiake.
