Richard Wenk To Pen Lionsgate’s THE SECOND LIFE OF NICK MASON

Director Antoine Fuqua’s 2014 reboot, The Equalizer, set the tone promptly for a potential hit franchise that now leaves us a sequel currently dated for September 29 next year. In the meantime, the name to keep close to here is that of screenwriter Richard Wenk who penned both films as well as the upcoming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and The Magnificent Seven remake.

According to Deadline, Wenk will now put pen to paper in adapting author Steve Hamilton’s upcoming novel, The Second Life Of Nick Mason, which will publish next month. The film is being developed by Lionsgate following a book deal last summer while a director and cast info remain pending. Nina Jacobson, Shane Salerno and Brad Simpson are producing with a synopsis that reads as follows:

Nick Mason is a career criminal who is released from prison after serving only five years of a 25-year sentence. He promptly moves into a tiny condo on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago, living with a beautiful roommate and driving a new car. The circumstances behind Mason’s release soon become clear: He made a deal with an infamous Chicago crime lord, Darius Cole, who lived on the same cell block as Mason and used his clout to free Mason, only if the ex-con will pick up the crime lord’s cell phone call and execute everything asked of him, from robbery to murder to fixing any problem, no questions asked. Mason made this Faustian bargain so he could re-connect with his estranged daughter. Hounded by the cop who put him away in the first place, Mason must figure out how to get out from under.

Sounds like something that’ll bode nicely for the R-rated film crowd. I’m in!
