Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was a hit before reaching the starting line, earning copious amounts of critical praise for its performance at the 2015 installment of Cannes with notable box office earnings by its wide October release. Talk of a sequel was already blooming before then when it was announced that Villeneuve and the film’s scribe, Taylor Sheridan, were developing a follow-up that would focus on the character, “Alejandro”, played memorably Benecio Del Toro, one of the gritty key players in the narrative pitting U.S. law enforcement against criminal kingpins operating at and beyond the Mexican border.
At the time though, it wasn’t known if Villeneuve would return to helm. That said, he’s currently attached to direct a forthcoming
Blade Runner sequel with actors Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling for MGM, and so it only makes sense to look for a new director which is reportedly what happened according to the latest update from
Deadline announcing Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima
(Gomorra, Suburra, A.C.A.B. – All Cops Are Bastards) to sit at the director’s chair for the sequel officially titled
Soldado for Lionsgate. Sheridan, just off of his own directorial debut with next year’s release,
Wind River, wrote the script which the report otherwise confirms the return of Del Toro and actor Josh Brolin for the respective roles of Alejandro Gillick and CIA/DoD agent Matt Graver; Both characters partnered exclusively on their own terms, willfully operating in darker shades of grey to lead the charge against the war on drugs and ultimately fueling the conflict on interest laid out in the intial film for lead actress Emily Blunt in the role of principled FBI agent Kate Mercer.
An interview back in March over at The Hollywood Reporter talked of Blunt’s return to the sequel, although the new report from Deadline comfirms the opposite. Black Label Media and Lionsgate are co-financing the film as talks move forward for a possible start date this Fall.
