Review: FINAL SCORE Is No ‘Sudden Death’ Tie Breaker, But ‘Die Hard’ Enough For The Right Crowd

There’s no question going into director Scott Mann’s latest, Final Score. Hailing actor Dave Bautista in his second outing with Mann since the 2015 film, Heist, you get a solid, simple, genuine and bare-bones hostage flick with some really cool and fun moments and thrilling sequences. Similarly, might also wonder if Mann ever pondered a scenario in today’s era where a film in the vein of John McTiernan and Peter Hyams might earn the appeal of twenty-something moviegoers today. It’s an admirable idea worth discussing, although with Final Score playing front to back, it doesn’t change the fact that you’ve probably seen this movie already. Dave Bautista Action Thriller, FINAL SCORE, Lands A September 14 U.S. Release!

Sky Cinema already has the UK and Ireland for Scott Mann’s new action adventure, Final Score. Accordingly, Saban Films is officially declaring a win with a VOD/Digital HD and select theatrical release for September 14, and a U.S. trailer to boot! After deadly terrorists abduct his niece at a soccer match, an ex-soldier with lethal fighting skills (Dave Bautista) wages a one-man war to save her and prevent mass destruction. Bautista is joined by Pierce Brosnan, Ray Stevenson, Julian Cheung, Lara Peake, Alexandra Dinu and Ralph Brown from a script by Jonathan Frank, David T. Lynch and Keith Lynch.

The Tournament and Heist helmer Scott Mann’s latest follow-up, Final Score, has been a long-awaited one. Nowadays with a teaser in its wake, an official trailer arrived this week with plans for a theatrical and on-demand release in Ireland and the UK from Sky Cinema starting September 7. It’s “Die Hard in a soccer stadium” when ex-soldier Michael Knox (Dave Bautista) has to use all his military skills to save the 35,000 capacity crowd at a top flight football match when they’re held hostage by armed kidnappers demanding a ransom. Bautista, of Marvel’s MCU, fame is joined by Pierce Brosnan, Ray Stevenson, Amit Shah, Lara Peake and Ralph Brown. There are currently no release plans elsewhere but we’ll be sure to help provide those updates in due time.

As late as I was in discovering Hong Kong cinema per my own fandom by the mid-1990s, I proudly went with the momentum, keeping up with as many Dimension, Miramax and Sony releases as I could. One of my favorite DVD picks in the years going forward would be a blind purchase of Aman Chang’s 2000 action adventure comedy, Fist Power, pitting Vincent Zhao against co-star, actor, stuntman and nowadays a stunt coordinator, Jude Poyer. It’s been years since I’ve seen that film, although anyone, in my view, who watches and follows Asian films for as long as I have, or even longer, knows that someone like Jude stands out in a particularly cool way. Fans of actor and Marvel prospect Dave Bautista (Guardians Of The Galaxy 1 & 2, Spectre) aren’t too far off for some big screen time; Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s Bushwick is currently in post-production while Matthias Hoene’s Warrior’s Gate opens in China on August 12, ahead of Bautista’s re-envisioning of classic martial arts villain, Tong Po in Kickboxer: Vengeance on September 2 in the U.S. In the meantime, there’s still news to report on his end, especially if you’ve enjoyed his recent work under director Scott Mann in the 2015 thriller, Heist. Fans looking toward Heist helmer director Scott Mann for a follow-up of his 2009 action thriller, The Tournament, may be in for a longer wait. For now though, you can expect to find him around London sometime this Summer or Fall for the upcoming production of his newest hostage thriller, Final Score. The Brothers Lynch – David and Keith, are penning the script which sees a former soldier who must use his skills amid a bustling stadium during a major sporting event to rescue its 35,000 occupants, including the daughter of his fallen comrade, from a squad of heavily armed captors. Highland Film Group is representing the film at the European Film Market in Berlin next week, with Highland’s own Arianne Fraser and Delphine Perrier executive producing.
