Director Roy Chow‘s grand plan to reinvent once-living martial arts legend and cinematic folk hero, Wong Fei-Hung wasn’t without its fair share of criticisms from purists. At some point between now and last week, action legend Sammo Hung‘s latest project saw a change in cast for the once-titled The Old Soldier. It had a different premise at the time, and now it seems the project is taking on a new objective with a brand new title in the form of The Bodyguard. And to top it all off, Hung is not only directing in it, he’s starring in it as well! Screendaily is reporting the film’s current production now backed by Lava Bear, Edko Films, Irresistible Films and Focus Films for Hung to star alongside Firestorm (2013) lead, actor Andy Lau who also produces. The latest cinematic telling of the life and legend of martial arts master and healer Wong Fei-Hung has some new production and distribution participants in its midst with news that the folks Universal Pictures International are joining in as co-producers and majority international rights holders of director Roy Chow‘s new film, Rise Of The Legend. The new film stars Unbeatable lead, actor Eddie Peng in the title role, whose image can be now seen in the newest sales banner courtesy of Deadline: The film is produced by Bill Kong with a script by Christina To, featuring Peng who follows in the footsteps of previous martial arts cinema icons and written Chinese novels dating back to the 1930’s. New York City residents lucky enough to have three full days off this week can now share in the joy and wonderment to be experienced at this month’s Old School Kung Fu Fest to be held at the Anthology Film Archive. Now in its second year, the events will be hosted by Subway Cinema and The New York Asian Film Festival in conjunction with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and The Korea Society, with a total of nine films, guest speakers and an artists’ poster exhibit paying tribute to legendary late great kung fu cinema auteur Lau Kar-Leung. Chinese website Oriental Daily forwarded a new small slate of stills and behind-the-scenes pics from director Wong Ching-Po‘s forthcoming release of Once Upon A Time In Shanghai. Revamping a classic story from the Shaw Brothers library, the new film centers around the emergence of an immigrant from Shangtung whose search for a better life lands him in Shanghai where his talents as a skilled fighter may be the deciding factor of his survival or his comeuppance. The film is one of the most hotly-anticipated films to date as it inches its way to a January 10th, 2014 domestic release from Mega Vision Pictures LTD. About a year and a half ago, martial arts cinema fans watched as actor Phillip Ng took the stage and peformed and illustrious flurry of kung fu action for a brand new promo for director Wong Ching-Po‘s upcoming film, Once Upon A Time In Shanghai. Since then, it wasn’t until within recent weeks fans finally got a look at some new poster art, and even better, a small series of viral behind-the-scenes featurettes with footage from the film. In the past three months, all that we officially knew of the Sil-Metropole Organization Ltd.’s long-awaited sequel for the 2005 Hong Kong action thriller, S.P.L. since it was greenlit back in August was the possibility of actors Francis Ng and Andy On joining returning cast members Sammo Hung and Jackie Wu Jing from the first film, in addition to a cameo appearance by lead actor Donnie Yen with Champions and Revenge: A Love Story scribe, Jill Leung Lai-Yin penning the script .
