The third and latest installment of the Raiders trilogy from director Jingle Ma may have taken thirteen years. Alas, it’s as they say “all things in good time”, and on August 17, fans who’ve pined for a follow-up to Tony Leung’s suave espionage/spy action stylings seen in Tokyo and Seoul can now take a gander at Europe Raiders on August 17 with this week’s trailer now making the rounds. For years, Mr. Lin Zaifeng and Miss Wang Chaoying have held the ranks of the best in the business, a position no one could touch. As both are rival and friend, they also held mutual respect for each other as well as enmity. What started as a simple contest between the two bounty hunters is when the “Hand of God”, a little bot capable of immense destruction, draws out the European mafia, the CIA and Euro-pol special agents into an all-out […]
Segueing from steering the action and stunt work coordinating films like Ant-Man, Ninja Assassin and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, Peng Zhang now rests his prospects at the helm. This one is no small feat either however – reportedly five years and with a tall order of $100 million dollars to date for Ningxia Film Group’s upcoming Buddhist fantasy action adventure, Asura, making it China’s most expensive movie in history, and as the hopeful first in a trilogy. Signaling this month with an official teaser trailer ahead of a release midway in 2018, the film introduces a story set in the titular realm of pure desire which now finds itself threatened by a staged coup from a lower kingdom. Leading the way are burgeoning talents, actress Zhang Yi Shang (Railroad Tigers) with Lei Wu (The Shanghai Job, upcoming Nehza) starring as saviors to the realm and evident love interests to each other […]
Cold War 2 [Blu-ray]Cold War 2 [Blu-ray] In 2012, the original Cold War served as a proclamation to the world that Hong Kong could still produce a rock solid thriller. It was a tense film that relied on plot and characters to drive the suspense and used action sparingly whenever the situation reached an impasse that only ballistic violence could solve. Cold War was easily one of the most entertaining thrillers of the decade, yet its resolution left a few narrative threads dangling. As it turns out, those threads weren’t an oversight; they would form the basis for the film’s even more thrilling sequel. The original film dealt with a Hong Kong Police emergency: several officers and a van full of valuable equipment are ambushed and taken hostage. What set the film apart from other police thrillers was that it focused not just on the conflict with the kidnappers but […]
THR is presenting an in-depth glimpse at the gargantuan production scale of debut director Peng Zhang’s latest, Asura. The film takes its cues from ancient mythology and is centered on a story involving the titular dimension – defined as a realm of desire, which is threatened by an uprising from a lower heavenly kingdom. The film, marking the start of a hopeful trilogy, stars 16 year old actor Lei Wu as the protaginist of the film with veterans Carina Lau and Tony Lau also starring, as well as 18 year old Zhang Yi who plays our hero’s love interest. Partly Beijing-based actor Matthew Knowles also stars in addition to Damien Walters, known as one of the internet’s most eye-popping stunt performers to date, and contortionist Bonetics Junior. Painted Skin: The Resurrection hit film producer Zhenjian Yang is producing the film which is reportedly budgeted at a solid $100 million dollars, […]

Directors Longman Leung and Sunny Luk blew moviegoers away with their 2012 hit film, Cold War, a tale of events that would become the ultimate litmus test of the tumultous politics of the Hong Kong Police Department between two leading branches. Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung led the way and carried the film’s superb tone with sheer gravitas and gusto in their performances, and a terrific script by Leung and Luk to keep the intrigue and explosive action going. That said, going into their latest, Cold War 2, save for a few minor plot holes and disparities, we get a film that measures similarly in capacity with ample delivery. Kwok and Leung return in their respective roles immediately following the events in the first film with Kwok starring as the former head of management and now newly-appointed HKPD Commissioner, Sean Lau, and Leung in the role as former head of […]
Directing duo Longman Leung and Sunny Luk had a hit on their hands in 2012 with the Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka-Fai headliner, Cold War. On top of its box office earnings that year, the film won a raft of wins and nominations in the festival circuit, further solidifying the next logical step: the sequel. Thus, anyone with a computer and a love for thrilling Asian cinema will have come across the numerous trailers, promos and posters of which there are MANY. That said, the film has become one of the most highly anticipated sequels of the summer following the first film in which Kwok and Leung led the story of two opposing authorities of the Hong Kong police force caught amid tumultuous internal politics in the wake of a mysteriously disappearing police van, and instances of terror and corruption involving the ICAC. With the story unfolding and the […]

It was a bit over a year ago that the new epic fantasy actioner, League Of Gods began production, and judging by the first teaser back in April, you might have guessed the look would have been just as less-convincing as a lot of other CG-heavy films from the region. However, an official release has been set for late July and with about a month and a half left, a new trailer has surfaced, so, varying opinions notwithstanding, this one looks much more impressive, and the inclusion of co-star Jet Li will sure play a role in getting the film the traction that directors Vernie Yeung and Koan Hui are looking for. With a production budget of HKD$300 million, the film features a star-studded cast such as Jet Li, Tony Leung Ka-Fai, Fan Bingbing, Huang Xiaoming and […]

Aside from all its accolades, director Wong Kar Wai‘s most recent kung fu epic, The Grandmaster, is probably the most lauded by critics for the tedious approach its helmer has taken to bring about a perfect version, of which there have already been several in the past year or so. Nontheless, Wong took it upon himself earlier this year to take the film back under the knife once more for a 3D conversion announced earlier this year in the hopes of creating a more streamlined and cohesive film, one that will likely be much more shorter than its original Chinese release. Alas, the newly 3D-converted film will be getting a 111-minute duration with some newer footage for its China audience beginning on January 8, 2015. SYNOPSIS (from TWC): Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, THE GRANDMASTER is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the […]
Fun fact: martial arts action auteur Yuen Woo-Ping is awesome, a given fact for any martial arts action cinema fan familiar with his name and stellar credits, most notably the long-awaited release of director Wong Kar-Wai‘s biopictoral martial arts action romance epic, The Grandmaster. Starring actor Tony Leung in the prolific role of late martial arts pugilist and Wing Chun master, Ip Man, the film is Wong‘s most expensive project to date, following an arduous production between its announcement in 2008 and its installment of three different versions for China and Hong Kong, its premiere at the 63rd annual Berlin International Film Festival and finally in North America between January and August 2013. The film has been the recipient of dozens of awards and nominations ever since, and has been the subject of a 3D conversion by Vancouver-based top-tier Hollywood conversion company, Gener8 Media Corp. in conjuntion with distribution by […]
Action legend Jet Li has seen his fair share of career highs and lows; His most recent coming as the result of his current condition in the form of hyperthyroidism which forced the actor to step back from his normal physical routine, a move that also reportedly took a toll on his ability to stay in shape. As a result, while the 50 year old actor’s career has given him plenty of space to relax and breath as he moves up in age, the future seemed a bit foggy as to whether or not fans would ever see Li do another action film, or more films at all. Last year, it was reported that the actor stated to the press that he wouldn’t necessarily be making films for money anymore. In essence, it basically sums up the notion that he would pick certain projects — that was a while before […]
