The past few years have seen a graceful resurgence for actor, photographer and stuntman, Tony Chu. Rooted as a pioneer of online independent action cinema by way of his longstanding platform, Zero Gravity, 2014 marks Chu‘s return to the fray, having already filmed a few pieces with online independent filmmaker, Vlad Rimburg who just unveiled his latest ensemble experimental short, Tony’s Wrath.
Of course, not to be undone by any predecessors, Rimburg himself is a sixteen-year purveyor of independent action and stuntwork, and one of the most prominent and well-respected filmmakers by a number of big-name martial arts action stars and A-list Hollywood stunt coordinators. Using this to his advantage, Rimburg originally pursued up to over fifty people in a group message via social media. With busy schedules looming among many, up to twenty five people people became participants in the new project.

“Tony and I spoke about filming more projects together, and we thought of shooting a group fight.” says Rimburg. “I figured, why not ask almost everyone I can and see what happens. I wanted to give Tony the ULTIMATE group fight.” He then added, “When I created the group message, I let everyone know that this was for Tony. He’s done so much for a lot of people, and I felt that he deserved this and expressed that in my message to everyone. It’s also great to see one of the ‘founding fathers’ of indie online martial arts filmmaking, Tony Chu, reappear in the scene. Being able to film with him is very unreal, and I never, EVER, thought that something like this would come about.”.
And to think all it took were four days in chilly 30-35 degree weather between 7:00am and 11:00am. Awesome indeed, although above all else, if you are familiar with the online action community in its hey day, you will understand the sentimental value that a project like this carries. Tony’s Wrath is not just another test fight. In a way, it’s also a celebration.
So where’s the cake! ? Ah, nevermind.
