Despite suffering the elongated woes of stifling film festival politics and Chinese censors a few years ago, Guan Hu’s most recent war epic, The Eight Hundred, finally managed to get a theatrical release to blockbuster fruition, albeit shorter in duration then. The film also scored releases overseas with CMC Pictures taking U.S. territory, and for this, folks in the U.K. can themselves make way for a physical rollout this Spring courtesy of Trinity CineAsia. Joe Cornet’s new film, Assault On Rio Bravo, is casting up this week following announcements in January. The film, billed as an action-packed western with strong horror elements, is the latest project currently gaining traction for actor and producer Alexander Nevsky, who marks a reunion with several cohorts from his 2016 action ensemble, Showdown In Manila. McQuoid directed the film from a script by Greg Russo, and will premiere in theaters, IMAX and HBO Max on April 16. A feature adaptation is in development based on Rage helmer John Balazs‘s multi-award winning 2017 shortfilm, Dancer. Balazs is developing the script as we speak, reteaming with Rage scribe Michael J. Kospiah on the new revisal which is currently under wraps with story and casting details. Dancer bore out of Balazs’s Prima Lux Films banner, where he and producer Marlane Ghmed have built a movie-making resumè for themselves dating back to 2014. Soi Cheang will direct Kowloon Walled City, an adaptation of the popular 2010 cult manhwa, “City Of Darkness”, from creators Andy Seto and “Yuyi”. The first official teaser is now streaming online for New World and V.I.P. helmer Park Hoon-jung’s new South Korean crime noir, Night In Paradise. Produced by Goldmoon in association with Peppermint & company, Inc., Night In Paradise tells a story of a man targeted by a criminal organization and a woman on the verge of life and death. Zone 414 helmer Andrew Baird’s new action thriller, One Way, landed multiple deals on Tuesdsy. Highland Film Group is handling worldwide sales rights on the film which stars Colson Baker, Kevin Bacon and Storm Reid. Lee Yong-ju’s new dramatic sci-fi thriller, Seobok, has stood the test of time after facing delays last year due to the pandemic. The new domestic release strategy nowadays lies with CJ Entertainment taking a first-time day-and-date approach, releasing the film in theaters and through CJ ENM’s in-house streaming service, TVing on April 15. Seo Bok tells the story of Ki Heon (Gong Yoo), a former intelligence agent who is terminally ill, given the task to safely transport Seo Bok (Bo-gum), who is the first human clone. Because the clone holds the secret to immortality, everyone is on the run to get their hands on him as to extract that secret. Ki Heon will do everything within his power to shield the clone from people with evil intentions. Seo Bok also stars Jo Woo Jin, Jang Young-nam and Park Byeong-eun.

MONKEY MAN: Dev Patel’s Upcoming Revenge Thriller Wraps Principal Photography

Actor Dev Patel is currently tapped to appear in David Lowery’s The Green Knight this summer in the U.S. from A24. In the meantime, he’s also completed principal photography on Monkey Man, announced initially back in 2018. Production was reportedly slated for early last year in India, but since relocated to Indonesia due to the Covid-19 pandemic which rocked the world with some territories ramping up safety measures for film production. Cameras reportedly rolled in December, and following a sixty four-day shoot, completed principal photography this past week, according to several sources via recent posts on Twitter, as well as Instagram.
