Needless to say, it’ll certainly be under a different title with A Writer’s Odyssey now in place for a Chinese New Year release with a U.S. date on February 12 from CMC Pictures. The last twelve hours have been more than irking for anyone who’s been following the stars of the new Mortal Kombat movie on social media, but we now have a new look at exclusive photos and stills from the upcoming Simon McQuoid directed reboot thanks to an exclusive piece on Friday from reporter Nick Romano at Entertainment Weekly. The report highlights a ten minute sequence introducing a “blood universe” of sorts, that begins with the history of characters Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), followed by a look at starring actor Lewis Tan who plays an original character named Cole Young, a down-on-his-luck fighter with a mysterious birthmark in the shape of the titular MK logo that connects him to these characters of the game, and ultimately, the tournament. One of the more impressive and rather important aspects of writer and director Ranjeet S. Marwa’s new thriller, Exiled: The Chosen Ones, was getting all the pieces needed to complete his new film after wrapping principal photography late last year in Birmingham, U.K.. Alas, if you’ve been keeping up with Marwa’s social media posts on Instagram, you’ll have noticed the director cheering on his second unit’s completion of footage over in Jakarta welcoming the addition of actor Oka Antara (The Raid 2, Foxtrot Six)with a new look at his role as a rifle-touting assassin mysteriously eyeing a target. As to the identity of the character he’s aiming at remains a mystery, though such is only befitting of a PR move so as to help keep the suspense going. THE KILLING OF KENNETH CHAMBERLAIN Launches Sales At Voltage

Writer/director David Midell (NightLights) is now poised for movement under international sales agent, Voltage Pictures, for his new film, The Killing Of Kenneth Chamberlain. The film made its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival in 2019, starring Frankie Faison (Do the Right Thing, Silence of the Lambs, Banshee) in the title role, based on the real-life police-involed incident that took place on November 19, 2011 in White Plains, New York. The film’s acquisition was announced by Vertical President and COO Jonathan Decker, in partnership with Revelation Entertainment. Midell is producing along with Enrico Natale of Redbird Entertainment, with Revelation’s Morgan Freeman, Lori McCreary and Gary Lucchesi, next to Sharad Chib, Chris Paladino, and Milan Chakraborty. Vertical Entertainment has released the official trailer and poster for Payback. The film is directed by Joseph Mensch (producer: Asher, Bushwick) who penned the script with Metin Aksoy. Mike Markovich, a young stockbroker at a Mob-controlled Wall Street firm, is betrayed and imprisoned for six years. When he is released, his deadly quest for vengeance begins. Payback stars Matt Levett, Anna Baryshnikov (Dickinson, Manchester By The Sea) and Toby Leonard Moore (Billions, Mank) and opens on Digital and VOD from February 5.

The last twenty years have been fruitful for director Kimo Stamboel who continues to garner a good share of ceremony for his ventures in genre cinema, notably of the horror variety. The Macabre, Killers and Headshot co-helmer’s new film, The Queen Of Black Magic, is on track to hit AMC’s Shudder streamer on January 28, and the official trailer and key art are finally making the rounds. The Queen Of Black Magic is Stamboel’s latest partnership with Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Gundala, Impetigore), and serves as the latest incarnation of Liliek Sudjio’s 1981 horror classic of the same name. This one is just one of several titles incoming from Stamboel who I’ve had my eye on since he was announced to partner with a certain producer/screenwriter for an action film I’ve been dying to see made, and I certainly hope this pic gets him closer to it. Back in the limelight for one more turn at publicity is Nekotronic director Alister Grierson with Bloody Hell, the new film releasing in select theaters and on Demand from January 14 via The Horror Collective. Nerdist has the exclusive red-band trailer, packed with delightful moments from the film, including some good doses of the red stuff to couple with actor Ben O’Toole leading the charge. We had a chance to review the pic as well and thus, look carefully and you might see us quoted in the trailer around the 2:01 mark… What can I say? I liked the movie! A man with a mysterious past flees the country to escape his own personal hell – only to arrive somewhere much, much worse. The film is now slating a March 5 release Japan and with trailers currently streaming online. Following up on WOWOW’s TV drama adaptation of Shuichi Yoshida’s Kazuhiko Tanako spy novels, Tatsuya Fujiwara (Kaiji and Death Note movies) leads the way as elite spy Kazuhiko Tanako, alongside Ryoma Takeuchi (Love Stoppage Time) in the role of his partner Ryoichi Taoka. Rue Morgue has the exclusive trailer and poster for supernatural action horror, Hellkat. The film is directed by Scott Jeffrey and Rebecca J. Matthews from a script by Michele Pacitto and Jordan Rockwell, and has a cast headed by Sarah T. Cohen. Katrina [Sarah T. Cohen] is a washed-up MMA fighter who must come back to the ring and fight in a tournament to save her son’s life. But the tournament is in hell, and she will have to fight her way past man, beasts and the demons that haunt her from within. Also starring are Ryan Davies, Serhat Metin, Adrian Bouchet, AJ Blackwell, Clive Cohen, Abi Casson Thompson, Ricardo Freitas, Arthur Boan, Michael Hoad, and Jon Callaway. Hellkat opens in the US from February 2 from Uncork’d Entertainment.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from director Ranjeet Marwa since the crank-up began last year for his most recent films, Exiled: The Chosen Ones. To be clear though, Marwa and producer Djonny Chen have been busy developing other projects as well as toiling through post-production, including a small round of additional shoots which wrapped in Jakarta. Having since completed the Birmingham shoot late last year for most of the cast including Sunny Pang and Hannah Al-Rashid, the new footage now includes shots of Oka Antara as promised upon earlier casting, including a shot Marwa teased on Instagram on Wednesday. Teiichi: Battle of Surpreme High, Rurouni Kenshin and Mask Ward actress Mei Nagano takes the lead from a script by comedy creative, Bakarhythm, for the story of an office lady whose mundane worklife routine spawns into all-out war among cliques of other office ladies.
