Australian duo Dominic Pearce and Aaron McCann have spent the last several years stirring a ruckus with the gonzo comedic mockumentary, Top Knot Detective. Originally an episodic then edited swiftly in feature film fashion to present to audiences, the film has earned countless praise from festivals and niche sites around and thus, the good folks over at Third Window Films are ready to oblige with a Region Free Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray and DVD on March 18. In the early 90s a little known Japanese Samurai/Detective series hit Australia where it quickly became a cult hit. BURNING SWORD: ‘Sekigahara’ Star And Director Reunite For Meiji Rebellion Novel Adaptation

Director Harada Masato (Killing For The Prosecution) is at the helm once more clashing swords and tempers for late Edo period piece, Burning Sword. Production is underway with Harada adapting author Shiba Ryotaro’s 1960s Shukan Bunshun publication centered on the wartime chronicles of Hijikata Toshizo, the Shinsengumi vice-commander who led the shogunate forces against the imperialist Meiji government during the Boshin War. The new film, slated for a tentative 2020 release in Japan, hails from Toho and Asmik Ace, marks the latest iteration for Burning Sword which saw previous film and television adaptations in 1966, 1970 and 1990. According to YesAsia’s Yumcha news column, Library Wars and SP film franchise star, V6 J-pop group member Okada Junichi is taking the reigns as Hijikata, reuniting with Harada since their 2.4 billion yen hit, Sekigahara in 2017. If updates from last year were any hint, classic Tsuburaya property, Ultraman, has a bright future ahead of itself. The latest serial treatment from the minds of Kamiyama Kenji and Aramaki Shinji (Eden Of The East Appleseed and Ghost In The Shell franchises), are staking their next claim in its Netflix rollout which commences April 1 from Production I.G and Sola Digital, and the official trailer is out this week. The week of March 22 is gonna be packed with big screen fervor for moviegoers. Take the release of Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota – The Man Who Feels No Pain, for example, from director Vasan Bala who is still drawing some of the warmest reception stemming from its screenings previously at Mumbai and Toronto and onward. Casting aside what we already know from Monkey Man, we can now add Green Knight to the list of items now on par for Lion, The Wedding Guest and Hotel Mumbai star, Oscar-winning actor Dev Patel. Produciton hails from A24 with A Ghost Story helmer David Lowery tapped to direct an adaptation of a medieval poem from Arthurian lore later – later parodied in Iris Murdoch’s 1993 novel, “The Green Knight”. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the most famous tales in early English literature. As the story goes, chivalrous and loyal Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, accepts the challenge of beheading the Green Knight and must wait a year and a day to receive a blow in return. SHAZAM! Gets A Superpowered Second Official Trailer

With the current DCEU bookended officially as confirmed by Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara as of last week, the limits have have been pretty scaled back which otherwise gives director David F. Sandberg’s latest, Shazam!, some breathing room when it opens April 5. The newest official trailer is running online as well, so this ought to help things move along as wait and see whatever happens elsewhere in-roads of the studio’s DC adaptations. David F. Sandberg (“Annabelle: Creation”) directs New Line Cinema’s “Shazam!,” the origin story that stars Zachary Levi (TV’s “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV’s “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. It’s been a long time since we last heard from Malaysian filmmaker James Lee who first came on our radar with an array of amazing short films. Distribution Solutions/Alliance Entertainment and Archstone Distribution are partnering for a May 14 VoD/Digital release before a DVD rollout on July 2. Colt, a gunslinging werewolf slayer from the old west who mysteriously rises from the grave, only to find that the band of werewolves that brutally murdered his wife is still running rampant generations later. This is gonna feel like such a tease, but the folks over at Discussing Film were able to get in touch with Greg Russo on his progress with the screenplay for the upcoming Mortal Kombat film. The script is complete according to the report, and for which Simon McQuoid remains attached to direct as he’s been since November 2016. The inquiry therein by Eric Moskowski delves into the issue of the overall tone in comparison of sorts to the Marvel movies, and also which characters Russo generally finds pivotal to the mythology – though it still remains to be seen if they’ll be the darn movie because the studio’s lips are remaining tighter the seals of the upcoming Mueller report. Stemming from Kitakubo Hiroyuki’s 2000 OVA and its posterity through CLAMP and Production I.G.’s furtherance of anime shows and films, it’s director Shutaro Oku who’s been leading the charge of late with a spate of live-action films nodding to the Blood franchise. Enter Blood-Club Dolls 1 following Asura Girl – the live-action 2017 prequel release of Shiotani Naoyoshi’s animated feature, Blood-C: The Last Dark (2012). REMINISCENCE: ‘Westworld’ Showrunner Sets Action Sci-Fi Directing Debut For Late 2019 Start

It was back in January ahead of EFM that Hugh Jackman and actress Rebecca Ferguson (The Greatest Showman) were circled for roles in the forthcoming action sci-fi, Reminiscence. It was reportedly a hot package among buyers and thus, developments this week bring word that Warner Bros. has acquired global rights to the project with principal photography commencing around late October in New Orleans and Miami. Mike Fleming Jr. who has extensively covered the film’s development at Deadline since January, states that the film aims to share that similar layered, complex tone and vision that Lisa Joy has become known for in applying her craft to the hit HBO series, Westworld, on which she serves as writer and showrunner with Kilter Films’ Jonathan Nolan. MAFIA X: ‘Den Of Thieves’ Director To Tackle War Between Organized Crime And Global Terrorism For Thunder Road, Pioneer

While we wait for developments on a Den Of Thieves sequel, Deadline has it on good terms that it’s director, Christian Gudegast, will leave another mark on his film credentials with Mafia X. This one is based on his own pitch and is being described as “high concept action thriller inspired by the true stories of organized crime groups banding together to fight terrorism.” Gudegast is best known for screenwriting A Man Apart and London Has Fallen, and for rolling out from the top of 2018 with upwards of $80 million dollars for his directing debut on Den Of Thieves for STX Entertainment. He will direct from a script he will also co-pen with JP Davis (upcoming Naja) after just closing a deal with Thunder Road Pictures and Pioneer Pictures. Basil Iwanyk, Robert Kravis, and Karl Herrmann are producing.

Warner Bros. Advances EDGE OF TOMORROW Sequel With New Writer

On Friday, Mike Fleming Jr. over at Deadline confirmed interest at Warner Bros. in a sequel to the 2014 hit sci-fi, Edge Of Tomorrow (a.k.a. Live. Die. Repeat for its home release). The film featured Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in the story of an untrained public relations officer swept into a timeloop forcing him to re-live his death as he trains to survive amid an alien invasion. Based on Sakurazaka Hiroshi’s “All You Need Is Kill” manga, the film grossed $370.5 million dollars for the studio along with co-fi partner Village Roadshow. Talk of a sequel had since been stirring even through the press rounds for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation among others, while Deadline has it on good terms that a pitch by Matthew Robinson (The Invention Of Lying) is breathing new life into sequel prospects. A new LA Times interview with Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara is putting The Matrix franchise back in the spotlight. The Wachowskis’ – Lana and Lily (then Larry and Andy at the time of the films’ popularity), directed the trilogy from 1999 through 2003, spawning the franchise from a multitude of mediums and influences drawing from religion, philosophy, pop culture, anime sci-fi and kung fu. Tsujihara gave the franchise a mention amid answering questions on what other franchises he would like to see rebooted – this, after a lengthy discussion on life at at Warner Bros. following AT&T’s purchase of TimeWarner Inc. Chinese censors may be skiddish of director Jia Zhangke’s creative endeavors, but that hasn’t stopped him from moving forward. His newest, Ash Is Purest White, is still putting its best foot forward and with Cohen Media Group having acquired the film for U.S. release at Cannes last May, an official trailer is already online ahead of its March 15 due date in select theaters. Qiao is in love with Bin, a local mobster. During a fight between rival gangs, she fires a gun to protect him. Qiao gets five years in prison for this act of loyalty. Upon her release, she goes looking for Bin to pick up where they left off. Well there’s no Billy Idol here, but the latest official trailer is here for director Neil Marshall’s very much R-rated adaptation of Hellboy coming in April. We have new posters as well but as almost always, there are two versions of the new Hellboy trailer out now – the green band and the red band versions, and you can best believe I’m featuring the latter here. Because we love red-bandy things! Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.
