A BETTER TOMORROW 2018: Ding Sheng Samples A Remade John Woo Classic In The First Teaser

I’m a little hard pressed to believe the latest teaser for Ding Sheng’s A Better Tomorrow inspires anything more than some mild curiousity. Then again, it is just a teaser and the man who brought us three of Jackie Chan’s biggest films does certainly have the capacity to be hard-hitting with a touch of tragic heroism to boot – a fact somewhat notable in Police Story: Lockdown. Does it make him the next John Woo? I digress, but he’s taken himself to task with a cast that aims to echo such tropes inspired by Woo’s signature 1986 crime thriller starring Ti Lung and Leslie Cheung with actor Chow Yun-Fat earning himself a prominent spotlight. If you’ve been keeping up any on Korean director Kim Yong-hwa (Mr. Go, 200 Pounds Beauty), you might have been keen on his latest webtoon adaptation epic, Along With The Gods, which is officially getting a December 22 release from Well Go USA. The film also doesn’t rollout in South Korea until the 20th with reactions pending although at this juncture, it’s safe to say the project is doing some wonders for the director now at the center of anothe major project involving Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment. Prodigal is the name of the film from POW! Entertainment and Luka Productions, and is described as “a superhero film about ‘paternal love’” according to a recent report at Screendaily. Netflix has reportedly snatched up sci-fi thriller Tau this week over at the American Film Market according to Screendaily. The film marks the feature debut for noted storyboard artist Federico D’Alessandro whose credits include a raft of Marvel movies, as well as I Am Legend and Terminator: Genysis. Leo Zhang’s China-Australia co-production, Bleeding Steel is readying releases worldwide thanks in large part to its worldwide acquisition by Swen Asia, excluding China. The Swen Group’s Swen Asia shingle is prepping a simultaneous day-and-date theatrical and digital rollout in association with WME-IMG China on December 22 with territories slated for North America, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and most Asian territories. The Hollywood Reporter is offering its first look at actor Bruce Willis in the upcoming World War 2 action drama, The Bombing. The new photo comes just as Blue Box International has launched sales at the American Film Market this week ahead of a hopeful 2D and 3D China release early next year. Based on the infamous air raid attack on Chongqing during WW II, US Air Force Commander Jack Johnson (Willis) trains the Chinese people under harrowing conditions how to battle against the Japanese and leads his own aviation squadron against the trained Japanese Air Force. AFM 2017: Revenge Thriller Remake, HARD POWDER, Goes To Lionsgate

Lionsgate Variety is reporting that Lionsgate has officially nabbed the U.S. rights to the upcoming black comedy crime thriller remake, Hard Powder. Liam Neeson stars in the remade tale of a humble ski town snowplow driver in the Rocky Mountains who ensues a gang war between opposing sides while seeking bloody vengeance for the murder of his son. Neeson is joined by Emmy Rossum, Laura Dern, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Julia Jones, John Doman and Aleks Panouvic from a script by Frank Baldwin. Hans Petter Moland returned at the helm following the hit Norwegian original, Kraftidioten, which he directed for Magnet Releasing’s 2014 U.S. release re-titled In Order Of Disappearance with Stellan Skarsgård starring. Neeson’s next stop will be in theaters this January in Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Commuter, also from Lionsgate.

AFM 2017: Werewolf Thriller VOICE OF THE WOLF Is Underway In Italy

Production is currently underway as of late last month in Italy for director Alberto Gelpi’s upcoming horror thriller, Voice Of The Wolf. Global Genesis Group LLC. has since picked up U.S. release rights for the film described as a modern twist on the werewolf legend set in Central Italy, and are introducing the film to buyers this month at AFM. Set in a central Italian province, Voice of the Wolf follows Nico, a suspended cop with a dark and violent past. While returning home to visit his dying mother, Nico reunites with his old girlfriend Alba. During the visit, a mutilated dead body is found in the nearby forest. Snowpiercer helmer Bong Joon-Ho continued his reign this year with Okja, a milestone sci-fi rescue adventure that became recipient to critical praise, as well as condemnation by critics of its distrubutors at Netflix. Early on after screening at Cannes, the film was banned for a time by South Korea theaters, signaling the growing rift between exhibitors and the online streaming service which has only grown in its agenda in recent weeks as it readies to ramp up a plethora of original films through 2018. China-Produced LEGEND OF THE GALACTIC HEROES Trilogy Adaptation Gets A 2020 Kick-Off

Japanese novel series, Legend Of The Galactic Heroes, is currently readying a trilogy adaptation in China. Jiaxuan Global Pictures, established in 2015, have acquired the rights to the IP for the first of three films to arrive in 2020. Created by Tanaka Yoshiki, the franchise propelled its story centered on two driven leaders brought to an empass on opposite ends of an intergalactic conflict, ending a 150-year stalemate between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. The Seijun Award-winning series initially took off in 1982 from publisher Tokuma Shoten and continued onward through manga and anime releases, as well as a live stage play performed by Takarazuka Revue. For this, we get Fast Convoy and an official first trailer with a theatrical and digital HD rollout slated for December 5. Seven men, four cars and 1,300 kilos of cannabis leave Malaga, southern Spain, headed for Creil on the outskirts of Paris. But for Alex, Yacine, Majid and the others, what should be a regular run turns into a fatal convoy. Jang Chang-won’s directorial debut is edging closer to its November 22 start in theaters for heist comedy, The Swindlers. That will be just over a week off from its expected rollout in North America starting December 1 while Well Go USA is making things official with its own push. Trailer included. High stakes and fast talk are the game in this crime caper that brings together an all-star cast (Yoo Ji-tae, Hyun Bin, Bae Seong-woo, Park Sung-woong, Nana) as unlikely allies from different sides of the law. Each member of the team has their own motives, but they’ll have to work together to achieve their common goal – trapping the world’s most legendary con man. Check out the trailer below!

AFM 2017: Zhang Yimou’s SHADOW Goes To Bloom For Buyers

Bloom is taking The Great Wall helmer Zhang Yimou’s new movie, Shadow to the American Film Market this month. The film is currently in post-production according to Wednesday’s exclusive at Screendaily, with a story set in the Three Kingdoms era about a king who attempts to lead his displaced people out of exile, and those who play a role in his mysterious plans. Starring are Deng Chao, Sun Li, Zheng Kai, Wang Qianyuan, Guan Xiaotong, Wu Lei and Wang Jingchun from a script by Zhang and co-scribe Wei Li, and hails from Village Roadshow Pictures Asia (VRPA) and Le Vision Pictures who are co-producing the pic with Ellen Eliasoph and Catherine Pang serving as producers. Endeavor Content, forged early last month from WME Global and IMG has North American rights.

It’s been nearly a year and a half since we’ve seen or heard any info on the most recent completion of upcoming actioner, Out Of Control. As it stands, news from Screendaily now reports the Chinese co-production filmed in Germany with Axel Sand (Alarm for Cobra 11) and Richard Lin sharing dual directing duties will now have an audience with buyers this month at the American Film Market with global sales agent Arclight repping. Toplining is Korean popstar, actor T O.P. (a.k.a.
