VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS Presents A Boundless New Trailer For The Loyal Besson Crowd

French producer and filmmaker Luc Besson has always had an appreciation for sci-fi. It showed in the 1997 futuristic actioner, The Fifth Element which contained some of the wackiest and far-out set pieces ever seen, albeit befitting of 90’s cinemafare. Fast forward up to 20 years later by then when it’ll surely show once more by next year’s release of Besson’s latest intergalactic endeavor, Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets. Taking its cues from the 1971 installment of Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières’s 22-part French comic series, Valérian and Laureline, the film was announced four years ago, whereupon Besson was already plotting his forthcoming success with the 2014 mind-bending action science allegory, Lucy. Gary Daniels Joins Asif Akbar Sci-Fi, ASTRO

Badhouse Martial arts star Gary Daniels has a batch of projects coming in the new year. As of this week, one of them now includes the latest directorial offering from director Asif Akbar for the new film, Astro, which managed to secure financing at the American Film Market in Santa Monica this week. Astro, according to THR, casts Daniels in the new sci-fi about a billionaire whose private space exploration program and its arrival back to Earth includes a kidnapped alien from a newly discovered planet. It’s a little difficult to tell what kind of film this will be judging by the report but with Daniels front and center, perhaps the action fans will have something to look forward to here. Banderas’s Battlescars Revealed The Set Of Isaac Florentine Actioner, STOIC

Courtesy of Antonio Banderas’s FB fan page The past several weeks have mostly seen Spanish-language headlines for the current production of the new action thriller, Stoic. Nowadays with the film’s star Antonio Banderas posting on social media, you can expect more English-language sites to finally pick up on the film currently shooting in Bulgaria. The film brings Banderas, in his latest foray into the genre following The Expendables 3, together with martial arts action auteur, filmmaker Isaac Florentine in this, his 15th film. Banderas is joined by Karl Urban (Dredd, Star Trek: Beyond) Paz Vega (Sex and Lucia) for the story of a lawyer desperate for vengenace against the person who murdered his wife and son. UK Indie Graphic Novel Style Actioner WE ARE SAMURAI Casts ‘Street Fighter’ Series Star Koieyama Akira

Exclusive: Mercs helmer Michael Morris is ready to seugue onward with his latest period thriller, We Are Samurai from Basement Act Productions. The project has been in active development in the last few months with a pre-production teaser promo for the film currently pending. Story details are not being disclosed but the film is described as a graphic novel-style action movie in the vein of 300, as hinted at in the graphic below. Actor Koieyama Akira is the first listed to star in the film and no specifics have been given about the role apart from what is suggested in the above image, although the announcement also highlights the project as something that has never been done before. The New MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Film Gets A Title And Release Date

Currently at my hand is my own recovery from election fatigue while I get back into the thick of things. Alas, amid all the craziness came news of M: I6 – Mission Impossible, now stamped for a July 27, 2018 release date. Promising more action and bigger stunts, actor Tom Cruise will be back no less to star in, as well as produce along with Paramount Pictures and David Ellison’s Skydance. The cast is far from confirmed though it’s currently expected that actress Rebecca Ferguson may reprise her role from last summer’s preceding hit success, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Production is expected to commence in the Spring from a script by Christopher McQuarrie who is signed on to direct. Next year’s June 19 and September 29 dates mark the respective releases of Universal’s remake/reboot of The Mummy and Doug Liman’s American Made. H/T: Variety

I’m both excited and pained at the return of director Kitamura Ryuhei in the years since he became a fan of his work out of Napalm Films, landing notably with the cult acclaimed Versus starring Tak∴. It looks like things have taken a bit of a turn for the initially announced Makeshift Squad. The film, previously announced to be helmed by Gary Mak with an “Asian Expendables” styled tone, has reportedly been restaffed with a new director, as well as retitled under the name, Triple Threat. Arclight Films is taking the film to the American Film Market for buyers with the cast currently packaged as mentioned before with action stars Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen. Official Synopsis For Jesse Johnson Actioner, SAVAGE DOG

It was just this summer when we finally learned of director Jesse Johnson’s latest return to the director’s chair for period action thriller, Savage Dog. The attachment of actor and martial artist Scott Adkins certainly emboldened things a bit followed by news of fellow stars Marko Zaror and Cung Le along with actress JuJu Chan certainly helped keep things afloat as production moved forward. The promotional campaign for the film hasn’t officially begun yet although what came of it about a month ago was a mock promotional poster which you can click here to check out. Marvel EXCLUSIVE: Director Scott Derrickson’s latest contribution to the Marvel big screen fanfare, Doctor Strange, finally opened its mystical doors to the U.S. on Friday. The film is also available in the U.K. where it opened late last month and is certainly bolstering the martial arts community some where martial artist and lovely in-person individual to meet, actress Zara Phythian hosted a screening of the film to help raise awareness for the upcoming three-day WMKF World Martial Art Championships in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire starting on November 11.
