KILL ZONE 2 – A Conflict…

Full disclosure, before we begin… I watched this film with two different minds. It was a Jekyll/Hyde experience. One, incidentally, that the film itself captures in one of my favorite scenes. It is between the two principal characters on which the onion layered narrative hinges it’s caboose, and it happens in a dark, claustrophobic location; a prison cell. Tony Jaa’s character Chatchai (featuring prominently in the film, …sometimes), and Wu Jing’s character Chan Chi-Kit are having a lost in translation moment during which Jaa is attempting to convey some decidedly important information to Jing. Only, the two men speak different languages (Chitchai speaks Thai, Chi-Kit speaks Cantonese) and are forced to improvise with the use of a cellphone translator. HIGANJIMA: DELUXE Traps You On The Worst Island Ever In The Latest Trailer

Neko Samurai 2 helmer Watanabe Takeshi is returning to cinemas this October with his latest thrillride, Higanjima: Deluxe, succeeding author Matsumoto Koji’s 2002-2010 Kodansha manga series, and the live-action film and TV show thereafter. A few teasers began making the rounds this year but the latest trailer is online, along with another few promo bits highlighting some great tropes for what looks to be a colorful, spectacular action horror adaptation. SYNOPSIS: Higanjima is a solitary island dominated by the vampires and monsters that the immortal vampire Miyabi (Louis KURIHARA) has created. Following up the TV series from 2013, Akira (Hayato SHIRAISHI) and his friends go back to Higanjima in order to look for his missing older brother Atsushi (Ryohei SUZUKI) who fought together against Miyabi. Korean Action Comedy, SHOWDOWN Squares Off With A New Character Trailer

It’s been a while since South Korean cinema dominated our radar with action films save for a few recent hits. Leave it, however, to Untouchable Lawmen helmer Shin Dong-yeop who now heads to the big screen this Fall with his latest action comedy, Showdown. Featuring debut lead actor Lee Joo-seung, the film tells of a young street fighter and second-in-command gangster who resorts to training under an old martial arts master, and viral video celebrity via his chat forum to challenge the suspect who put his detective brother in a coma amid a pending murder investigation. Filmmaker Doug Liman may be a bit despondent over losing his baby by 2005, but the former still has a several reasons to stay optimistic…well, a few. Null at the moment, of course, is Gambit since actor Channing Tatum is signed to playing a damn merman in some remake I could care less about while other prospects lie with a hopeful Edge Of Tomorrow sequel. His newest feature film endeavor, however, now lies with Lionsgate for Chaos Walking, based on the 2008 YA novel trilogy launchpad from author Patrick Ness. Nolan's DUNKIRK Sees Incoming In The First Announcement Trailer

Just a little over a few months since production began for writer and director Christopher Nolan’s new World War 2 thriller, Dunkirk, we’ve now come to with a first trailer announcing the film ahead of its July 21 release next year. There’s not much to spot right away in terms of star power but you’re immediately set into the unpredictability of planes flying overhead as soldiers land on the beach with hell about to break loose. HOMETOWN HERO Gets Far From A Hero's Welcome In The First Trailer

Directing duo Dave Lugo and Matt Schwartz are setting sail this summer from El Ride Productions with the new action drama, Hometown Hero. Headlining actor Jordan Tisdale for his own coming-out feature debut, we get a story of a former soldier with PTSD and forced to square things with some seedy characters in the midst. Our villain? Actor Eric Roberts who leads a pack of white supremacists to try and force a hero out of his home. You can imagine the carnage that ensues, or better yet, even sample some of it in the first trailer below. Sure, it’s a familiar-sounding premise and all, but any action thriller involving a hero taking out a gang of bigots with Roberts menacing on screen as the villain is a notable treat for certain. Nope, I’m not waiting for any updates on action star Wesley Snipes starring in another Blade movie. That’ll happen when it happens, and IF it happens, but I’m moving forward nonetheless with prospects now looming over at Minds Eye Entertainment where production is now underway for the new sci-fi action thriller, The Recall. To what capacity Snipes’s character aside from the rest of the cast will be though is unclear except his role will be that of “The Hunter” which is already my selling point as a fan. The announcement, however, does hint at bolstering The Ghostmaker helmer Mauro Borelli’s visual artistry chops, which does read promising considering what his IMDb page reads like. Filipino action cinema still has its hurdles nowadays, and some of it is still much ado with the unwillingness to take certain risks to help bolster such films from the region. Fortunately that hasn’t hindered the earned acclaim by filmmakers like Erik Matti (On The Job, Honor Thy Father, Erik Matti, The Aswang Chronicles) who is reportedly pivoting to the martial arts genre with his own contribution. Director David Yates’s forthcoming fantasy adventure, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, got quite a trailer last month at Comic-Con as you can see above. David Lam’s S STORM Gets A Thrilling New Trailer

Director David Lam’s 2014 corporate action thriller, Z Storm, was a mixed bag of good and ridiculous with a story centered on the watchdog exploits of the ICAC. It was quite the thriller with Michael Wong serving as a notable villain, might add, and so this Fall, the next chapter commences with the me S Storm (or Z Storm 2), and with a cast once again led by Louis Koo. SYNOPSIS: Continuing after the anti-corruption battle in the earlier film, Z Storm, the sequel centres on the ICAC agent’s next move towards an even more uncontrollable case about the illegal world of Sports / Soccer gambling, which makes him re-enter the dangerous area? Dave Green’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows wasn’t something I got to see at the theaters, and judging by box office returns I don’t think there will be a third, which is unfortunate. I actually wanted to see more of what the studio had to offer following the introduction of Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang onto the big screen for the first time as it meant so much for this to happen and I actually kinda hope that a third film happens. The principal cast did sign a three-picture deal, so it’s not too late, methinks. At any rate, the latest film is heading to home video this Fall, and with a few cool trinkets as well. Opinions may vary, but if there was ever a manga or anime series to get into as someone who loves anything Otaku, it’s author Kawahara Reki’s hit 2009 print, Sword Art Online. The show itself is currently available on Netflix with both seasons following the emotional roller-coaster full of action, suspense, intrigue, danger and romance encompassing the lives of coming-of-age young adults keen on virtual reality multi-player online gaming. Ito Tomohiko directed the series is also helming the forthcoming 2017 feature anime, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, which will take on the events following the Gun Gale Online and Mother’s Rosario arcs in 2014. Warner Bros. Indeed, action star Steven Seagal’s film career has gone quite unceremonious in the last fourteen years. He was a pinnacle of 90’s action movie stardom on the big screen next to the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis before ultimately seuging into the smaller-scale direct-to-DVD market where he otherwise continues to make a name for himself among loyal niche action fans. Zombie Thrillride, TRAIN TO BUSAN Is Up For A Remake

The past 24 hours have been electric with echoes of a possible reimagining of filmmaker Yeon Sang-Ho’s hit zombie thriller, Train To Busan. That news now comes by way of THR‘s Heat Vision column who report of a bidding war now underway between Sony, 20th Century Fox, Gaumont, Canal+ and EuropaCorp and others pursuing the rights to the film. As a follow-up to Yeon’s 2014 animated movie, Seoul Station, Train To Busan sees actor Gong Yoo (The Suspect) as a father struggling to reconnect with his young daughter, only to get swept into an epic battle for survival when a mysterious viral outbreak consumes the Busan-bound bullet train they’re on. Well, my weekend was all work and no play, but I did get to view a handful of shortfilms and a terrific independent feature film well on its way. Reviews will arrive in due time, while I’ve since gathered up what I could for this week’s installment of The Hit List, and I hope it suits your fancy. As always, the first round of action goes to the stunt professionals, coordinators and players alike with actor, martial artist and choreographer Matt Mullins, whose prolific work on ABC series, Marvel’s Agents Of Shield makes for a nifty little demo reel full of action clips from the show to start things off properly.
