Filmmaker John Woo is back in the limelight in recent months, and for good reasons aplenty in the wake of his latest international production launch, Manhunt, a remake of Sato Junya’s 1976 thriller now slated for 2017. Since then, at least one other helmer circulating his work is actor Stephen Fung who is currently up to direct a remake of Woo’s 1991 heist action comedy, Once A Thief, which also piles onto his previous efforts at another Woo title, the 1986 Hong Kong cinema classic, A Better Tomorrow. If there’s one thing I’m glad about while writing about director Benny Chan’s newest period actioner, Call Of Heroes, is the guarantee that it’s coming abroad as well. The film is just less than two months out from its release and host to a raft of fine acting and action talents such as Eddie Peng, Sean Lau, Louis Koo and Wu Jing leading the story of a village in 1914, wrought with danger when its protectors arrest the son of a warlord committing vicious acts of murder. Looking at the trailers of which there have been three so far, there’s no mistaking that the overall tone of this movie is going to be an enthralling one. As we speak, Johnson is set to produce and possibly appear in an adaptation of the forthcoming graphic novel publication, Son Of Shaolin. With news of Willem Dafoe and Fast 8 co-star Kristofer Hivju confirmed for roles in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Justice League, more details are beginning to roll out about what the director has in store. Much of this has to do with a change of pace from the grim and gloomier tone of its predecessor, Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice which faced a massive mix criticism partly founded on its shortcome box office results. This one threw me for a loop. I have to say, looking at the title and the cast for Greg Mottola’s Keeping Up With The Joneses. I didn’t expect this to be what it was, but after watching the trailer, I can honestly say I’m sold. SYNOPSIS: An ordinary suburban couple (Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher) finds it’s not easy keeping up with the Joneses (Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot) – their impossibly gorgeous and ultra-sophisticated new neighbours – especially when they discover that Mr. and Mrs. “Jones” are covert operatives. The New Teaser Poster For POWER RANGERS Brings Our Heroes Together

Director Dean Israelite has some expectations to fill next year with the release of Saban’s Power Rangers. With a March 2017 date stamped and the prospects of at least seven films rebooting for its adaptation of the hit Japanese Tokusatsu series and its subsequent American counterpart, we already have a good idea about how our color-coated heroes will look. To that end, we’ve since gotten another casting update with actor Bryan Cranston in the role of transdimensional sage and leader of the Rangers, Zordon. It’s just a matter of time before we see what that visually entails, but rest assured that for a Hollywood film with a such an ambitious scope, one can expect Israelite’s take on the property to be a worthwhile feat. Taking a gander at Cambodia for a bit, a new film is on the horizon from director Jimmy Henderson who caught much of our attention a few years ago with his feature debut, Hanuman. The film, a vigilante revenge thriller starring actor and martial artist Dara Ours, doesn’t have any overseas distribution beyond the region just yet, but has been released locally and screened among a few including myself, and while low in budget with some corners cut, the film delivers good and plenty on what it promises when it comes to its fight sequences. Filmmaker Ding Sheng had a great year last year with his most recent crime thriller, Saving Mr. Wu. Following its overseas release and achieving accolades such as Feature Film Of The Year and Best Actor, the film was granted a limited U.S. theatrical release from United Entertainment Partners back in October – the same people that brought you one of Xu Haofeng’s best minimal martial arts dramas, The Final Master just this month.
