Dropping a nice little jewel online, the first official look at actress Liu Yi-Fei in the title iteration of Mulan arrived via Twitter on Monday. The photo signals the official launch of production from Disney with Whale Rider and McFarland, USA helmer Niki Caro directing. Actress Liu, whose preceding credits also include The Forbidden Kingdom, Outcast, The Four trilogy and Once Upon A Time, revives the fandom stemming from an ancient folkloric tale of a young Chinese maiden who masquerades as a male soldier in order to save her father. Disney rolled out two animated films both in 1998 with the Oscar nominated Mulan, and as a DTV release in 2004 while actress Zhao Wei took the mantle for a mainland production in China under director Jingle Ma in 2009. Liu leads a cast that includes action legends Donnie Yen and Jet Li, New Zealand actress Xana Tang and actresses […]
Award-winning Train To Busan director Yeon Sang-Ho is far from finished with the apocalyptic zombieverse he initiated in 2016. Jean Noh’s Monday report at Screendaily is just the latest bit of confirmation we’re getting on the acclaimed Train To Busan helmer’s efforts toward a sequel, two years since garnering festival praise and box office approval in South Korea and through Asia. That same year also saw updates of Gaumont’s own acquisition of the film for a possible English-language remake. Previous reports of sequel hopes have seen actor Gong Yoo weigh in from time to time, although news now indicates the film, tentatively titled Bando (a.k.a. Peninsula), will be just a continuation Train To Busan and set in the same universe with a new cast of characters. More to the point via Screendaily: “It is an extension of Train To Busan, after the virus has spread throughout Korea, but the characters […]

It’s been more than a year and a half since martial arts and stunt wunderkind Andy Long set a new benchmark with his debut starring lead in director Hoang Phuc Nguyen’s action adventure, Luc Van Tien: KungFu Hustle. The film has already seen a few audiences outside Vietnam where it was release in January 2017 while not a word was mentioned on any movement toward acquisitions and sales that I knew of. Fast forward to summer 2018 and with as much of an effort as it probably took for Long’s milestone segue into acting following a stellar path paved in independent action cinema and in the membership throes of film legend Jackie Chan. Thus, audiences as of next week in Las Vegas, Nevada will be the first bear witness this month at the Action On Film Megafest where the film will finally make its North American debut with seven nomimations […]
Production is already underway for Jesse Johnson’s entry next in Scott Adkins action film fandom Avengement, and both star and director have just featured the latest look at our protagonist in two new photos from the set. Judging by the overall look, costumes and hashtags, the new thriller sounds much like it’ll be in a prison/escape setting to foundate the plot, telling of Cain Burgess, a lowly criminal who sets out to his old stomping grounds to get even with the people who made him a cold-hearted killer. Joined by actor Louis Mandylor, Johnson and Adkins are freshly coming off of recent ceremony over gangster buddy action dramedy, The Debt Collector, one in a continuing string of titles they’ve principally shared in the last several years including Savage Dog and graphic novel adaptation, Accident Man. Dan Styles and Luke LaFontaine are rejoining the action design efforts according to Johnson’s Instagram […]

You’ve probably seen S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali films memefied at some point in recent history. If you have, then you might have an idea as to the degree of combined ridiculousness, awesome moments of stuntwork and battle scenery the two back-to-back films offer, and as silly as they are, you would be completely forgiven for enjoying the hell out of those movies. Conceived originally by Rajamouli’s father, K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, both were box office hits starring actors Prahbas and Rana Daggubati in the epic tale of self-discovery for a long lost son, legendary warrior and born leader as he battles to claim his birthright and save the kingdom of from a tyrannical government that has usurped itself to power. Preamble within the concurrent film story, actress Ramya Krishnan coveted the role of warrior queen Sivagami, the most powerful female character of the films as Queen Mother of Mahishmati and adapted […]
It was last October that actor Dave Bautista was tapped for an STXfilms starring vehicle – unnamed at the time but reported as bearing franchise potential. The status of that mystery project remained so even right when scribes John and Erich Hoeber were tapped to pen the script back in April. As of this week, it’s a mystery no more with word exclusively from The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit as of Monday for family action comedy pic, My Spy. Grudge Match and upcoming Second Act helmer Peter Seagal is directing the new film with Bautista producing next to Jonathan Meisner and Chris Bender. ‘My Spy’ will tell the story of a hardened CIA operative (Bautista) who finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, having been sent undercover to surveil her family. According to the report, My Spy is but one of several projects on which the studio […]
Is it me? Or does Mark look more and more like he needs more sleep? Word is that he needed some serious coffee rounds in order to stay “lit” on the set of his newest action thriller, Mile 22. It’s worth reiterating, however, that in all likelihood I’ll be seeing this in support of its biggest action star on set: Iko Uwais. The guy has several films rolling out before 2019 (including Timo Tjahjanto’s feature directing debut/Fantastic Fest pick, The Night Comes For Us) and Peter Berg’s newest endeavor from STX Entertainment is one of them as of the next few weeks The new featurette delves right into the nitties and gritties of the Indonesian import whose stardom in the care of filmmaker Gareth Huw Evans broke ground from 2009 to date. With Mile 22 serving as the start of a potential franchise, I’m seriously hoping this film gets it […]
Ronald Wimberly’s Image publication, Prince Of Cats, is now the subject of Legendary’s latest acquistion as of late Tuesday. As Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. exclusively wrote, the adaptation will be a starring vehicle for actor Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry To Bother You, Get Out, Death Note) with Selwyn Sefyu Hinds (HBO’s Who Fears Death) penning the script. Prince Of Cats was originally released in 2012 from DC/Vertigo, and is described as an 80’s hip-hop retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a mix of urban drama, samurai action and classic Shakespearean theater. Set in a Blade Runner-esque version of Brooklyn, N.Y.C., the story is told from the perspective of Romeo’s cohort, Tybalt, and his Capulet crew as they engage nightly in sword duels with the hated Montagues. Janet and Kate Zucker of Zucker Productions are producing Prince Of Cats. Jon Silk, who brought it in to Legendary, is overseeing with […]

In the meantime, attendees for the 75th Venice International Film Festival will get first dibs following the festival’s August 31 launch. As such, we now have a first official teaser following a June reveal of our two principal stars, Ikematsu Sosuke (upcoming Falling Camelia) and Aoi Yu (Tokyo Ghoul), hailing their first collaboration with Tsukamoto. And there’s no question here either – if you love chanbara, the new teaser more than signals where it stands for your fandom and stimulus from swordplay action and thrills. Front center of it all from a script by Tsukamoto is the story of a ronin trying to survive mid-19th century Japan during the course of its of violent transition from feudalism to the modern world. As previously reported, Ikematsu leads the film with actress Aoi […]
Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Dead Snow 2, What Happened To Monday?) will direct Millemium Films action thriller, War Pigs. Nick Ball and John Niven wrote the script stemming from its previous life as The Takedown with production set to comnence in October. The film’s previous existence titlted it as The Takedown in the form of a Tarantino-esque thriller according to The Tracking Board in 2014.
