MEDIEVAL: Ben Foster Slays In The First Trailer For Petr Jákl’s Explosive Epic
Writer/director Peter Jákl’s new period actioner, Medieval, didn’t exactly get the same kind of press push as other films, and it was published about eight days ago and has fortunately gone viral much through multiple uploads much to the team’s own delight.
At any rate, I just stumbled upon it on Thursday and am inclined to do my part here as I’m part of the film’s target audience and share one with readers, as it stars Ben Foster in yet another banger of a role in which this time, he plays a legendary military general.
Inspired by the true story of Jan Žižka, one of greatest warriors in history.
After the death of its reigning emperor, the Holy Roman Empire is plummeting into chaos while feuding brothers King Wenceslas of Czech and King Sigismund of Hungary battle for control of the empty throne. Daring and righteous mercenary leader Jan Žižka (Ben Foster) is hired by Lord Boresh (Michael Caine) to kidnap the powerful Lord Rosenberg’s (Til Schweiger) fiancée, Lady Katherine (Sophie Lowe), to prevent Rosenberg’s rise to power alongside the corrupt King Sigismund.
Jan believes that Kings are the right hand of God and should be respected and obeyed, no matter what. As Katherine becomes caught in a dangerous political game between the monarchs, Jan falls in love with her strong spirit and dedication to saving the people.
In a brave attempt to liberate her, he fights back with a rebel army to battle the corruption, greed, and betrayal rampant amongst those clawing for power. Jan now realizes that the fate of the Empire will be decided by his love for Lady Katherine and that his fate doesn’t lie in the hands of Kings, but in the hands of his own people.
Foster typically kills it in the action department. I first saw him in a co-starring capacity in Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2004 and you can imagine how much he’s leveled up in screen presence with roles in films like James Mangold’s 3:10 To Yuma, Duncan Jones’s Warcraft, Simon West’s 2011 incarnation of The Mechanic, Barry Levinson’s The Survivor, David Mackenzie’s Hell Or High Water and even Tarek Saleh’s The Contractor. It also helps that he’s got multiple black-belts in BJJ and several other Korean fighting arts, so it’s fantastic he’s putting much of his physicality into these roles.
Medieval will open in theaters on September 9 and on digital and On Demand on October 31 via Highland Film Group’s distribution shingle, The Avenue.
