SICARIO 2: DAY OF THE SOLDADO Sees Battle Lines Drawn In The Explosive Second Trailer

Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 crime opus, Sicario, was a solid piece of work from its premiere at Cannes that year through subsequent rollouts in December and following January. It’s sequel has already begun its campaign and already looks to fare just as excellent, if not better this year with Stefano Sollima at the helm, and the brilliant penning of screenwriter Taylor Sheridan to credit once more.

For this, we have a June 29 release in store for the newly-titled Sicario 2: Day Of Soldado, featuring stars Josh Brolin and Benecio Del Toro reprising their respective roles as federal agent Matt Graver and underworld enforcer Alejandro. The narrative? The U.S. government’s unilateral war on drugs by categorizing cartels with terrorist organizations – a plan that has all the trimmings for an explosive battle and an easy win…only until an innocent girl gets caught in the crossfire.

Just who is she? And where does this leave our mercurial anti-heroic assassin played by Del Toro in the long haul? That’s a question with answers the latest official trailer now hints at with all the stimuli you can hope for in an action-packed thriller to heat up your summer properly.

Also starring are Isabela Moner, Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener.

SICARIO Sequel Is In The Works At Lionsgate

Director Denis Villeneuve‘s latest crime pic, Sicario, has had a fantastic run this year with rave festival reviews and approval from critics since then. The film is currently rolling out in select theaters as of last week with box-office figures currently standing at $401,288 with over $66,000 on average per screens since then, which stands as good news for Lionsgate before releasing the film in more cities leading up to a wide release on October 2.

For this, the prospects of a sequel remain positive for actor Benecio Del Toro whose depiction of the mysterious character, Alejandro, is reportedly being developed for one, according to Variety. Villeneuve and writer Taylor Sheridan are reportedly working on the film although it’s not yet known if the film’s director will return to the helm.

Actress Emily Blunt leads the current film along with Del Toro and actor Josh Brolin which centers on a tough FBI agent who gets assigned to a task force on an off-the-books mission back-and-forth into the U.S.-Mexican border in the escalating war on drugs to take down a major cartel. With all the great press the film is getting so far, the signs seem good for a follow-up it it’s suitable, and Sicario is a film I haven’t had time to check out yet. But I’m definitely going to.

Not a bad lead-in for a filmmaker behind the upcoming long-awaited Blade Runner sequel, I’d say.

Josh Brolin Joins Mexico Border Crime Thriller SICARO And AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

I’m kind of a fan of former Goonie, actor Josh Brolin. No, I haven’t Spike Lee’s version of Oldboy yet, and I will, eventually. But I don’t really feel like he’s gotten his just dues as an actor, although he has earned some approval among filmgoers and film producers on the level, so much so that he was once a named candidate for the role of Bruce Wayne in the then-untitled Batman V. Superman movie.

Furthermore, I have also enjoyed seeing him on screen since appearing in films No Country For Old Men, American Gangster and Gangster Squad – films that didn’t need to rely heavily on special effects to appeal to me as opposed to just applying human talent through acting and physical performance. And it just so happens that filmgoers like myself will get to see more of that when Brolin joins the production of the upcoming crime thriller, Sicaro, from producer Basil Ilwaynk for Thunder Road Pictures, Edward McDonnell, ans also produced by the film’s financier, Black Label Media.

The film was announced at Cannes earlier this month upon North American and international pick-up by Lionsgate with Prisoners helmer Denis Villeneuve attached to direct. Brolin will be joined by actor Benecio Del Toro, with the film’s leading lady, Emily Blunt from a script written by Taylor Sheridan that centers on a law enforcement officer from Tucson, Arizona who travels to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries to track down a drug lord… Yes, my interest is pretty peaked!

Sicaro begins shooting this early June. In the meantime, action fans will be able to continue their summer blockbuster binge with Del Toro reprising his role from Thor: The Dark World as The Collector, and Marvel’s newest addition of Brolin as intergalatic villain, Thanos in the upcoming releases of Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy on August 1, 2014, followed by the May 1, 2015 release of Marvel’s The Avengers: Age Of Ultron; Blunt will appear nationwide in the critically-acclaimed upcoming North American release of Doug Liman’s new live-action manga sci-fi adventure, Edge Of Tomorrow, starting this Friday in theaters everywhere.
