Gina Prince-Bythewood may not be on deck immediately with the Black Cat/Silver Sable pairing at Sony, but the Love & Basketball and Beyond The Lights helmer is still sticking to her interest in comic book lore with an adaptation of 2017 Image Comics publication, The Old Guard.
Amazon Studios rolled out their first official trailer in fine form for Nash Edgerton’s new road action comedy, Gringo. David Oyewolo leads and teases a hilarious fish-out-of-water narrative for this one with actress Charlize Theron milking the heck out of another boss role alongside Joel Edgerton fetching his best American accent to date.
Mild-mannered pharmaceutical company executive Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) takes a business trip from Chicago to Mexico with his cutthroat bosses Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Elaine (Charlize Theron).
At the company’s Mexican lab, Richard orders manager Sanchez (Hernán Mendoza) to stop selling the bioengineered marijuana product Cannabax to a brutal, Beatles-loving cartel kingpin known as The Black Panther. Meanwhile, straight-arrow Harold learns he’ll be out of a job as soon as Richard and Elaine sell their newly cleaned-up company to a conglomerate. And when he turns to his wife Bonnie (Thandie Newton) back home for comfort, she confesses via Skype that she’s having an affair.
Targeted by the ruthless Black Panther, who hopes to gain access to the Cannabax formula, Harold disappears before his bosses return to Chicago. A few hours later they receive a call informing them he’s been kidnapped, and his captors are demanding a $5 million ransom. Rather than pay, Richard dispatches his mercenary-turned-humanitarian brother Mitch (Sharlto Copley) to extract Harold. But even with some temporary assistance from warmhearted American tourist Sunny (Amanda Seyfried) and her drug-mule boyfriend Miles (Harry Treadaway), Harold’s prospects for survival grow dimmer by the minute.
Pursued by an army of attackers, Harold crosses the line from mild-mannered citizen to wanted criminal. But is he out of his depth? Or two steps ahead? An action-comedy roller-coaster ride brimming with black humor, white-knuckle car chases and double-dealing, Gringo takes the concept of adventure travel to a whole new level.
That Edgerton, the acclaimed debut helmer behind The Square, is also stuntman speaks highly here to his accumulating credentials. His approach to outlandish and gonzo comedy here from a script by Anthony Tambakis and Matthew Stone looks proper and the addition of Sharlto Copley peppering things in that department should all but add to the delight when Gringo rolls out in select theaters in March.
A green-band and NSFW trailer are online… but I’m sharing the latter because I suspect that we’re all adults and otherwise concious beings aware of what to do and what not to do at the workplace. Enjoy!
If it means anything, my two cents can be read here. I almost didn’t bother posting one at the time but it actually felt good to get my thoughts out as much as I felt the need to stay on top of how I critique films now compared to when I started this site; a few certain films I’ve reviewed in the past are getting sequels involving filmmakers I’ve lended a bit of a curve to despite their flaws and I lately find myself shortening it, lest directors feel the need to use sites like mine to push their stuff on the count of how “awesome” it is because of the content I discuss.
The action is brutal, deadly and impressively lensed as action fans would hope. Lending greatly to the continuity are the visible bumps, cuts and bruises that come with Broughton’s occupation. You’re almost left wondering if the trivia around those lesions are comprised of cosmetics or, at least in part, make up a percentage of what Theron puts herself through in some of the action along with her own training.
Director David Leitch is already hitting the pavement with the current production of the sequel for R-rated action-packed Marvel thrillride, Deadpool. Alas, if you know Leitch and/or unless you’ve been tuning in to the current campaign for his solo debut at the helm, Atomic Blonde, you already get an idea of the metric by which you can guess just how fun this film looks like it will be.
To date, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road stands as one of the most continually stimulating films to date. Thus, its future franchise prospects notwithstanding, the film’s critical and commercial success have since allowed for Miller and the studio to pitch a version of the film in Black And Chrome for an alternative delivery in coloring and display.
That version now has DVD and Blu-Ray availability in the U.S. while Warner Bros Pictures is gracing fans of the film in the U.K. with a one day Black And Chrome screening on Sunday, April 30. That leaves a few days for U.K. residents to check their local listings for locations and showtimes to watch as Tom Hardy’s Max and Charlize one-armed Furiosa fight to defend a group of desperate slave wives from an army of occult soldiers and a dying Citadel led by tyrannical warlord Immortan Joe, played by none other than iconic Mad Max villain icon, actor Hugh Keays-Byrne.

Yes, action fans are happy thusfar and Leitch is a proven influence in that regard as his latest, Atomic Blonde, readies its July 28 with Mad Max: Fury Road actress Charlize Theron showcasing her usual tough-as-nails gravitas for this stimulating new thriller to heat up your summer. Best of all here is that amid Hollywood’s habitual shaky-cam tomfoolery, you can also SEE what the hell is going on in the action as everything that gets punched, stabbed, kicked, shot or flipped over is caught on camera with the utmost care, tact and professionality. It’s as if these people KNOW what they are doing! Weird, isn’t it?
Indeed, Leitch is the man directing Deadpool 2, and so if this trailer and ensuing film are any indication of how awesome both films are going to be, consider me sold!
Entertainment Weekly rolled out a bunch of exclusives on Wednesday, including new photos from director David Leitch’s latest, Atomic Blonde. The film is inspired by Antony Johnston’s 2013 novel, The Coldest City, for which actress Charlize Theron acquired the rights several years ago, and for reasons she so explains here in her statement to EW regarding her role:
The Huntsman: Winter’s War stars Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road, Monster) as the evil Queen Ravenna, who betrays her good sister Freya (Emily Blunt: Sicario, Edge of Tomorrow) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed. Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsmen as her protectors, with the only rule that no two of them should ever fall in love. As a war for domination escalates between the two queens, the hero standing between good and evil is Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Chris Hemsworth: Thor, Star Trek Into Darkness). Alongside fellow warrior Sara (Jessica Chastain: The Martian, The Help) — the only woman who has ever captured his heart — Eric must help Freya vanquish her sister or Ravenna’s wickedness will rule for eternity.
Some women collect shoes. And then you have Charlize Theron here sporting her own collection of sorts as per her latest casting as villain, Cipher, in the new movie, Fast 8 as seen in the new photo below.
