The usual spate of reviews are now making the rounds while word has it from The Wrap that RLJ Entertainment is staking its claim for the film’s U.S. release in a seven-figure deal brokerered with XYZ Films’s own Nate Bolotin alongside WME Global. Directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott are about to realize one of America’s biggest nightmares in the upcoming midnight Sundance premiere of Bushwick. Front and center is actress Brittany Snow who emerges from a subway only to find the titular Brooklyn neighborhood swept into a deadly insurrection by a private military aimed at seceding Texas and other participants from the union. The Business: The best thing about kick-ass fight scenes is they never get old—unless they do, of course. But hey, this is Kickboxer, the movie that defined the kick-ass, no holds barred ass-kicking. Lots of fight scenes. More than a lot. And then even more than that. By my estimate the film is 55% fight scene, 25% training montage, and (a meek) 20% story. I’m getting ahead of myself, though. Kickboxer: Vengeance is a reboot of the wildly successful 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme action flick, Kickboxer. The L.A. Times called it “egregiously dull,” joining with every other major publication in vilifying the movie. Well, despite this, it went on to gross over $14.5 million on a $2.5 million budget. Expected appearances by actors Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone aside, the cast is also expected to appear in the forthcoming Avengers: Infinity War and so forth, among other things, as per the 2014 film that saw our title characters take on an intergalactic supervillain with a purple Infinity Stone as their McGuffin. Remakes are a dime a dozen in 2016. Oftentimes, a studio will grave-rob a long dorment franchise and forcibly modernize it so that they can sell the name recognition while also trying to appeal to modern audiences. Oftentimes, this means reducing the goofy/dated charm of the original and injecting an unhealthy dose of gritty realism to make it feel more “modern”; results may vary. Somehow, John Stockwell’s Kickboxer: Vengeance dodges this pitfall and spin kicks it in its cynical face. It somehow manages to be the 2016 equivalent of the 1991 original. Its level of grittiness is comparable to Kickboxer’s early-90s “grittiness” while maintaining the lighter tone that helped make the original so entertaining. Actors Bruce Willis and Christopher Meloni leave some pretty good impressions here as does Dave Bautista who I can see becoming something of a much stronger actor apart from his prominence in wrestling, which I think is impressive; He’s got Kickboxer: Vengeance and Warrior’s Gate coming up along with Cary Murnion’s Bushwick, so I’m pretty stoked. SYNOPSIS: When a bank is hit by a brutal heist, all evidence points to the owner (Bruce Willis) and his high-powered clients. Let’s face facts here – the “boy traveling back in time to ancient China to help solve problems” plot is something we’ve seen before in some fashion or another. This time it’s Cockneys Vs. Zombies helmer Matthias Hoene on deck for his own take on the subject matter with actor Uriah Shelton playing our would-be virtual kung fu warrior in the new film, The Warrior’s Gate. The film is releasing this August in China thusfar while the promotional campaign itself finally starts taking shape with our first look at the all English-speaking cast Francis Ng, Taiwanese actor Mark Chao of Black And White fame and co-star of Derek Kwok’s upcoming Wu Kong, actress Ni Ni.
