Disney+ Delivers The R-Rated Goods With DEADPOOL, DEADPOOL 2 And LOGAN

Disney+ is ramping up its R-rated content this Friday with the releases of Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan, according to the trades and press announcements on Thursday. All three films will be made available in the U.S. under the Marvel brand. The news comes following the stellar success of the first two Deadpool films with a third to be directed by Shawn Levy in reunion with his Free Guy and The Adam Project star. It appears some parents dissenting over their young children not being able to endulge in a kid-friendly version of a hard-etched R-rated film may be getting their wish with Deadline reporting that Deadpool 2 is getting a PG-13 theatrical re-release on December 21. The film was released on May 18 on screens nationwide from 20th Century Fox, sitting stunt multi-hyphenate and filmmaker David Leitch in the director’s chair. The article noted the film’s listing as an Untitled Deadpool 2 movie which reinstalled Reynolds this summer as the merc with a mouth following the inaugural blockbuster hit from Tim Miller in 2016. It’s certainly an inviting feat apart from what we now get with an official international teaser trailer for the masses abroad as starring actor Vino G. Bastian readies to hit screens this August from 20th Century Fox and Lifelike Pictures. Taken from the pages of the long celebrated action adventure novel saga from Bastian’s father, author Bastian Tito, the story itself is set in the 16th century and centered on the axe-wielding hero of legend who accrues a number of skills on his adventures. Marvel movies continually manage to sustain a higher ground over their DC competition, and for a number of reasons. Having homes at more than one studio is one, including at Fox where the liberty given to the bustling Deadpool franchise, for all intents and purposes, has paid off handsomely. The upcoming May 18 sequel now looks to repeat that success and the production itself has seen quite the rollercoaster. At least one major concern, however, sits on maintaining the same balanced tone of fourth wall-breaking comedy jabs coupled with the kind of superb action Deadpool was known for. Acting out Ryan Reynolds in full-red and all the glam Hollywood money can buy, we now have a brand new poster with our anti-hero honing in on more good old-fashioned 80s nostalgia. I haven’t seen Justice League yet but I heard it was another mixed bag for some fans. Going forward, Warner Bros. still has a stake in the DCEU and will be ramping up efforts to promote James Wan’s own contribution, Aquaman, to the masses ahead of its December 21, 2018 release with Jason Momoa reprising as the Atlantean king now forced to deal with internal woes of his own Kingdom while fighting to preserve peace with people on land. I’ll see Justice League soon enough to garner an opinion here. Beyond that, let’s hope it’s not too late for the studio to pull itself together on this.
