Kids in Japan will soon have brand new adventures with the popular Chibi Godzilla and friends! Coming to TV Tokyo’s children’s anime block, CHIBI GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN is launching April 1st, 2023, as a series of almost three minute animations.
Fathom Events is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS in a big way! Never screened in U.S. theatres, the film will be hitting the big screen for a one night special showing, and even includes a bonus short film as part of the screening.
I stan guys like director Takashi Yamazaki, so it’s wholly a welcome feat that he’s being tapped to direct a new Godzilla movie coming on November 3, 2023.
Fathom Events is responsible for some of the most impressive, niche cinema runs in the United States, and they continue this trend with a first for Godzilla Day 2022! Never before seen in US theatres, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is heading to the big screen, 20 years after it’s release!
The Legendary Pictures Monsterverse has had a relatively successful run so far. Godzilla and King Kong have once more become household names in the West, but now that the Titans have battled, is it time for them to team up? Director Adam Wingard may be answering this question, as it’s been announced that Wingard will be returning to the Monsterverse, and is tasked with delving deeper into the clash among these Titans, with a story that will reach into the histories of Godzilla and Kong!
A new collaboration project has been announced with writer and director Hideaki Anno ( Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shin Godzilla) and his Shin films at it’s core. Billed as a “Miracle Project” on it’s official website, the collaboration has been launched in tandem by Toho, Color, Tsuburaya Productions, and Toei as a dream collab of four heroes that represent Japan.
The streaming channel TokuSHOUTsu, operated by Shout! Factory, today announced a special run of Godzilla film marathons for the month of November. The channel, which can be found on Plex, Pluto TV, TCL, Twitch, and Theta.tv, has so far been host to several tokusatsu films, including several from the Kamen Rider and Ultraman series. With this marathon, 17 films will air in chronological order.

Criterion lit a match under some asses earlier this year with their announcement of a Blu-Ray stack of Godzilla classic feature films from the Showa Era of the famed Toho franchise. Godzilla fans made out like bandits during this era, with practically ALL of his films seeing uncut, widescreen releases (with decent subtitles no less!). The pinnacle of these releases was the Classic Media edition of the original Gojira; released in its original, haunting glory for the first time in the U.S. (a feat that only took 50 years!). This special (ultimate?) edition included both the original Japanese version and its American counterpart, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, As if that weren’t enough, Classic Media threw in lots of special features with an audio commentary by Godzilla film historians serving as the cherry on top. This would be the first of a series that would set the gold standard for Goji releases. But in all the excitement, one film was conspicuously missing, Godzilla 1985 (a.k.a. The Return Of Godzilla).
Soon after wrapping things up with his upcoming Star Wars spin-off, director Gareth Edwards is set to return to underwater creature territory with the 2018 sequel release, Godzilla 2, following his worldwide box office success with the first film back in May. However, not to be outdone by the West, the mighty creature’s original roots at Toho Company, Ltd. appear to be gearing up for a return to the franchise of their own.
According to interpreted news from Japanese media via blogger August Ragone at The Good, The Bad And Godzilla, the company that started it all sixty years ago is going to produce a new feature film with plans to release it in 2016. Toho VP and general manager Satoshi Senda hosted a press conference on Monday announcing the new movie to be the brainchild of a new focus group titled the Godzilla Conference (or Godzicon) which will oversee the process behind developing the film, organizing and promoting the movie in the coming years. It’s being billed as the first “Domestic Godzilla” since Kitamura Ryuhei’s 2004 installment, Godzilla: Final Wars, and details are currently being ironed out for a production slate set to start next year in the summer with fellow Toho board members, 13 Assassins producer Ichikawa Minami serving as production manager and Trick: The Movie ~ Last Stage producer Ueda Taiji leading as project manager.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’s release of Godzilla received a luke-warm welcome, domestically, but gained global traction earning well over five-hundred million dollars, ultimately warranting a sequel for Edwards who went public back in July over at San Diego Comic-Con, revealing just a little bit on how much more monster muscle the titular King Of All Monsters will be facing in the next four years. With Toho now front and center, the announcement is a clear sign from the company that they are ready to show they have what it takes to outmatch Hollywood. But don’t take my word for it! “With the success of the Hollywood version of GODZILLA, we decided on a new [domestic] production,” said Ueda. “The screenplay is currently in development and we plan to start shooting next summer. We cannot announce cast or staff selections at this time. And we’re still deliberating whether to bring Godzilla to life via CGI or man-in-suit,…” Ueda then added, “The passionate voices of the fans clamored for a resurrection (of the Japanese Godzilla). We will bring the monster back to Japan, with the same high-quality, by bringing together our collective know-how, which we’ve been striving for, so we can’t lose to Hollywood,”.

The announcement today also included the unveiling of a new, roughly 40-foot tall fiberglass Godzilla Head, as well as the grand opening of a Hotel Gracery Shinjuku next to the Shinjuku Toho Building, all taking place in April as filming nears. Looks like Toho is ready to reclaim their throne and rule once more as the King of all Godzilla movies, although time will tell who will succeed in this epic rivalry between Japan and Hollywood from here on out.

Every now and then, a documentary comes along that inspires some reflection and changes the way you view a specific topic. For martial arts enthusiasts, such a documentary can be found in the recently released film, The Bladed Hand, a critically acclaimed and intricate retrospective into the world of the Filipino Martial Arts, hosting an eclectic array of interviews with fight professors and martial arts masters, as well as stuntmen and fight choreographers for film and television.
The film became a huge success upon its DVD and Vimeo VoD release last year since earning its praise with several screenings back in 2012, so much so that a sequel is currently underway as of November last year, with writing and producing trio, Jay Ignacio, Kent Vives and actor and stuntman Sonny Sison (Broken Path, The Lackey, Godzilla), back on board to bring the next film to life. And with a large handful of interviews already done with at least 20 more subjects to go, Sison took to his Facebook group to share a few recent photos with former Navy SEAL Chris Carraci, who will no doubt be featured along with his bladed weapon collection in the new film which could arrive later this year or in 2015. Following the success of his new blockbuster entry into the summer with Godzilla, director Gareth Edwards has been confirmed to direct a forthcoming Star Wars spin-off film. The news comes just as Edwards, whose own take on the classic Toho property broke opening weekend records at the box-office since its release a week ago.
Edwards‘ participation also arrives in time as Lucasfilm and Disney have already begun principal photography for the upcoming seventh installment being helmed by director J.J. Abrams who co-wrote the script with Lawrence Kasdan, who in turn, will also scribe Edwards‘ spin-off with X-Men: Days Of Future Past scribe Simon Kinberg. Details on what the plot of Edwards‘ film will be are currently unknown, except it is one of three spin-offs that were announced earlier this month, with at least one poised for a December 2016 release.
Edwards is also currently tapped to direct a second and third installment to Godzilla; Star Wars: Episode VII releases on December 18, 2015.

Godzilla continues to reign supreme scoring some major high marks with $103M worldwide at the box office and rising, making it the single largest opening weekend of the year. While some may have been, and continue to be doubtful of director Gareth Edwards‘ newest monster thriller reboot, in large part, all positive opinions outweigh any negative critiques that may be out there. Point in fact, our own Darren Bailey screened the film earlier this month and glossed over it in his latest review, callng it “the single greatest creature movie since Jurassic Park.”
I saw it in 3D in a late night showing on Friday, and I might see it again. However, if you have not seen it yet, all signs point to it as a must-see, if not merely a preamble to the sequel. Yes, Warner Bros has made it official and are now on board with Legendary Pictures to develop a second offering attributed as a true, visionary love letter to the 1954 thriller from Toho, with Edwards tapped once again to helm.
Personally, I’m happy this film won’t flop. It’s a great Hollywood reboot of classic franchise and does away with Roland Emmerich’s huge mistake of a film 1998. It’s also one of those proud moments in life where Hollywood finally gets it right. So, needless to say, there’s reason to rejoice, with more monster battles ahead and a great director that knows how to tap into the source material for a modern audience.

From the opening credits of the film, where vintage footage of nuclear bomb “tests” are shown, we are immediately engaged in this world. We see glimpses of Godzilla’s scaly back right from the get-go. The surprise isn’t that there is a giant, God-like lizard monster living underwater. We already know that, which is great. Now we can focus on the lives of the humans in this story, one where there just happens to be an epic creature living in the Pacific.
With a forthcoming mobile video game and prequel comic book on the way this month by Legendary Comics, Godzilla fans have all the reason in the world to stay excited as the King Of Monsters himself prepares to dominate the box office on May 16.
