DRUNKEN MASTER

The Korean Roots of Hong Kong Kicking

The fast and precise kicks of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, and other great Hong Kong action stars are staples of the Hong Kong style of action choreography, but if we look before Bruce’s 1971 breakout hit The Big Boss, there were almost no kicks to be found in any action cinema. Only Billy Jack, released in the same year in America, featured the same high-flying kicks courtesy of Korean Hapkido artist Bong Soo Han. The similarity between Billy Jack’s kicks and Bruce’s in The Big Boss is no mere coincidence: Bruce had picked up his cinematic kicking style by studying from Korean and Vietnam war vets who brought Korean kicks to the USA, Chuck Norris being a major player. In his backyard home videos, we see Bruce shooting spin kicks and stepping side kicks, experimenting with how to make these kicks cinematic. Bruce’s backyard filmmaking endeavors would become […]

Lee B. Golden III

Ready to re-live classic Jackie Chan on the big screen? Word from Polygon brings news that Janus Films, in partnership with Fortune Star Media, is offering limited releases in select cities for Police Story (1985) and Police Story 2 (1988). It kind of makes you wish this campaign was a bit more commercialized and wider in its exhibitor rollout but at least these are getting some new life to ring in the new year. POLICE STORY: The jaw-dropping set pieces fly fast and furious in Jackie Chan’s breathtakingly inventive martial-arts comedy, a smash hit that made him a worldwide icon of daredevil action spectacle. The director/star/one-man stunt machine plays Ka-Kui, a Hong Kong police inspector who goes rogue to bring down a drug kingpin and protect the case’s star witness (Chinese cinema legend Brigitte Lin) from retribution. Packed wall-to-wall with charmingly goofball slapstick and astoundingly acrobatic fight choreography—including an epic […]

Want Some Chan On-The-Go? Get Ready For Mobile-Friendly Ficto

Lee B. Golden III

By all accounts, 2019 may very well put debate to rest on how to hold a phone while viewing video… Project Xtraction, the Jackie Chan/John Cena two-hander from director Scott Waugh, is now slated to be packaged next year with an original series to be hosted on subscription-based premium app, Ficto, a new shortform video series platform from LA-based technology and content startup, Fiction Riot. The film is just one of three films announced for short form serial production among a listed number of up to twenty original and licensed shows for the new app following its introductory launch on Wednesday. The move comes in light of a recent study from Ooyala that suggests more than half of all video content is viewed globally on mobile devices, including longer form film and TV programs not optimized for a mobile experience. The app aims to achieve just that through leveraging native […]

KICKBACK PODCAST: Chatting It Up Among Jackie Chan Fans

Lee B. Golden III

On Thursday I had the distinct pleasure of being one of a crowd of folks to offer soundbytes of nostalgia and appreciation for the work of action star Jackie Chan. This comes as the 11th episode of the Kickback Podcast with Chris Jones went live this week with a multitude of voices weighing in, including stunt performers, podcast hosts, film producers and even martial arts students therein. His podcast launch this year marks his latest move since I actually began covering him during his activity as a member of a Leeds-based martial arts stunt and film troupe titled SG Action. Prior to pivoting into other professions, the team performed on a number of amazing shortfilms as a unit collaborating with other creatives, including Andrew Kueh’s Prime Contact and hip-hop artist Dream McLean’s “Weatherman” music video/companion to Robin Schmidt’s triad action drama, Dog, on which Jones served as stunt coordinator. Jones […]

Two of those titles will come packages together for a specialized release for fans with Police Story and Police Story 2 which now come branded with an official trailer ahead of an August release. Both films will have English and original Cantonese audio tracks which ardent fans of Hong Kong action cinema will easily appreciate. This, next to the continued sustenance of Chan’s screen persona – Ka-Kui’s bone breaking and death defying action, gags, stunts and memorable moments featuring Maggie Cheung, Lam Kwok-Hung, Benny Lai (fondly known as the “abba-abba” guy), late actor Bill Tung and the old school JC Stuntmen Association therein, should make for a more than ample deal for […]

Touchstone Pictures Another headlining rematch is on deck for Wilson Yip’s Ip Man 4 with Jackie Chan apparently set to appear opposite star Donnie Yen. This little detail, by way of a report on Wednesday at Jaynestars cites local news sources, confirms that filming has wrapped for the fourth installment in which Chan will play a respected Chinatown Big Brother amid the story setting that lands our title hero in the U.S. alongside martial arts progeny Bruce Lee. Yen and Chan have shared the screen together a few times in Shanghai Knights (2003) and The Twins Effect 2 (a.k.a. Blade Of Kings) (2004). The two are joined by Paradox co-star Chris Collins and Vanness Wu of Star Runner fame, both who share respective screen history with actor Scott Adkins who also stars. Jackie Chan And John Cena Team Up For PROJECT X From Scott Waugh

Lee B. Golden III

If Tuesday’s reported Jackie Chan’s venture is any bit as thrilling and edgy as The Foreigner, there’s a good chance it’ll be something to remember. Scott Waugh, rebounding from loose 2014 game adaptation, Need For Speed, is at the helm according to Borys Kit and Mia Galuppo at The Hollywood Reporter for tentatively titled Project X with Chan headlining next to actor John Cena. Production plans and further casting details remain pending for the film which Chan will produce as well as star; He will play a Chinese private security contractor called in to extract oil workers from China-run oil refinery in the Middle East when it is attacked. He soon teams up with a former U.S. Marine – to be played by Cena – to stop the attackers when he learns of their real plan to steal a fortune in oil. Jackie Chan’s BLEEDING STEEL Crosses Over To The U.S. On July 6!

Lee B. Golden III

Right about now it’s America’s turn to get ready to see Jackie Chan on the big screen with Leo Zhang’s sci-fi action thriller, Bleeding Steel. I haven’t read the reviews so I can’t say my piece fully on this but I’m more than welcome to the opinions and comments of fans who’ve been catching it since its theatrical Asian rollout in December. In an action-packed drama reminiscent of ‘80s techno-sci-fi thrillers, Jackie Chan stars as Lin, a police inspector in modern Hong Kong. While tracking down a deranged, mecha-enhanced villain, Lin discovers that a geneticist’s lost bio-chemical invention has been surgically implanted into his missing daughter. With the help of a young hacker, Lin connects the dots between the device that haunts his daughter, his enemy’s sinister army, and a strange cultural phenomenon called “Bleeding Steel.” Bleeding Steel is an action thriller featuring memorable battle sequences with martial arts legend […]

THE FOREIGNER Arrives Home On DVD, Blu-Ray And Digital This Winter

Lee B. Golden III

Martin Campbell’s latest thriller, The Foreigner, is coming home to Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital between December and January. Fellow contributor James gave the film a balanced approach in his owm analysis calling it “an immaculately shot, deliberately paced political thriller with sudden bursts of hardcore action from Chan…”, while some probably didn’t like how less Chan-centric it was in their view. Nevertheless, those who’ve missed out during its theatrical run can still pre-order themselves a copy in the wake of UPHE’s latest announcement below with artwork included. Global superstar Jackie Chan (Rush Hour trilogy) returns to the big screen like you’ve never seen him before in the action-packed film, The Foreigner, arriving on Digital on December 26, 2017 and on Blu-ray™, DVD and On Demand on January 9, 2018 from STXfilms and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), the film also stars Pierce Brosnan (Tomorrow Never […]

AFM 2017: Swen Group Picks Up Jackie Chan Sci-Fi, BLEEDING STEEL, For A Multiterritorial December 22 Release

Lee B. Golden III

Leo Zhang’s China-Australia co-production, Bleeding Steel is readying releases worldwide thanks in large part to its worldwide acquisition by Swen Asia, excluding China. The Swen Group’s Swen Asia shingle is prepping a simultaneous day-and-date theatrical and digital rollout in association with WME-IMG China on December 22 with territories slated for North America, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and most Asian territories. Jackie Chan, fresh off of impressing audiences in Martin Campbell’s The Foreigner, stars in the Zhang’s sophomore effort which centers on a hardened special forces agent who fends off a criminal gang whilst in protection of a young woman with whom he feels a deeper connection. Review: THE FOREIGNER Thrills With A Chan Flick That Is Anything But Formulaic

When I first heard about The Foreigner back in the halcyon days of 2015, I was puzzled as to why anyone would agree to make it; it was a Jackie Chan movie, directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), also starring Pierce Brosnan (Goldeneye)! This sounded like the worst idea for a movie since a Pacific Rim sequel not directed by Guillermo del Toro. Now, in defense of 2015 me, things weren’t exactly bright and sunny for the three names above. Chan, still trying to hold onto his glory days, was making big budget duds like Chinese Zodiac and Skiptrace. Campbell was nearly 10 years removed from Casino Royale and was also recovering from the recent Green Lantern debacle. As for Brosnan, he was still reeling from the shockingly dull The November Man and the forgotten film Survivor. There was absolutely NO REASON for this movie to be any good, which […]

THE FOREIGNER Arrives With A Second Official Trailer

Lee B. Golden III

Hitting high notes among fans, STX Entertainment’s campaign for the new revenge thriller, The Foreigner, has a fresh, new official trailer aheas of its October 13 release. The film is already on a warpath with television spots, and even clips like this one which I refuse to see. I mean… that’s just me as I’m already sold on the first trailer back in June. THE FOREIGNER, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is a timely action thriller from the director of “Casino Royale.” The film tells the story of humble London businessman Quan (Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love — his teenage daughter — is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat- and-mouse conflict with a British government official […]

Jackie Chan’s Sci-Fi Action Headliner BLEEDING STEEL Sells You On The Thrills You Crave

Jackie Chan’s Sci-Fi Action Headliner BLEEDING STEEL Sells You On The Thrills You Crave

Lee B. Golden III

Bear in mind the fact that Jackie Chan is 63 years old and he’s still doing action movies. Say what you will about any number of his recent titles – some of which I might agree to regarding lackluster delivery, his latest upcoming return to the screen with Martin Campbell’s revenge thriller, The Foreigner, has done plenty in ginning up excitement among loyal Chan fans waiting to see the honorary Award-winning action legend back in his element. The movie opens in Asia later this month and in the U.S. in October, and for this, the same hype might even be applicable given what we’re now being handed in the latest full trailer for Leo Zhang’s new sci-fi actioner, Bleeding Steel which opens in December. Zhang’s script here sees Chan in the role of a hardened special forces agent on the run from a sinister criminal gang, protecting a young woman […]
