THR’s Borys Kit is reporting that Aussie sibling film duo Danny and Michael Philippou are in final talks to direct an upcoming live-action adaptation of Street Fighter. The news comes following the acquisition of exclusive TV and film rights earlier this month from Capcom to Legendary Entertainment. The Philippou brothers are best known as the faces of the RackaRacka YouTube channel, creating spectacular and often explosive stunt action and comedy videos online. Their latest feature film effort, supernatural thriller Talk To Me arrives this summer from A24. Details are pending on their approach to the new Street Fighter film. As Kit notes in his report, however, “if they are being hired off the strength of their breakout, tension and gore may be on the agenda.” Interesting. The Philippous are now the latest in line of helmers to direct their own adaptation of the hit tournament fighting game property which launched […]
Trade news sources all reported on Monday that a new Street Fighter film is now in development. Via The Wrap, “exclusive license” has gone to Legendary Entertainment who are shepherding the film with Capcom. Story, plot and casting details are all unknown for the film which now adds to the monumentally successful franchise based on Capcom’s line of hit fighting video games which launched in 1987, spawning a wave of other trendy fighting games that arose in subsequent years. Apart from the original video animations that emerged, live-action adaptations were made and released in 1994 by director Steven E. de Souza (Universal Pictures’ Street Fighter), and in 2009 by Andrzej Bartkowiak (20th Century Fox’s Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li), and then in 2016 by actor and filmmaker Joey Ansah (Machinima’s Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist). I’ll leave you my thoughts on the latter installment in the Instagram embed below, but […]

Screenwriter David Farr is officially leading the charge for Quartermass, a feature film adaptation based on iconic British sci-fi hero “Bernard Quatermass”. Legendary Entertainment is backing the film in partnership with Hammer Films whose Simon Oakes is producing. Made popular by the successful BBC 1950s series, and a trio of films from Hammer Film Productions from the mid-50s to the mid-60s, the Quatermass character is often pointed out as a precursor to “Dr. Who.” Professor Bernard Quatermass is a fictional rocket scientist originally created by writer Nigel Kneale who, as a pioneering force of the British space program, encounters terrifying extra-terrestrial lifeforms and must draw from science to save humanity. Heralded as Britain’s first television hero alongside Sherlock Holmes, Quatermass’ monumental influence spanned films, television serials, radio programs and print media over a fifty-year period. Hammer Film Productions’ Quartermass And The Pit is perhaps the best-known iteration of the character; […]
Are you ready for more of The Toxic Avenger? Then look no further than Legendary Entertainment as they’ve just acquired the feature film rights for the cult-classic franchise that once flew the flag for low-budget indie horror banner, Troma. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz directed the original 1984 film set in Tromaville, New Jersey, and follows Melvin, a mild-mannered nerd who is consistently bullied and picked on until he falls into a fat of toxic waste. He soon turns into the repulsive-yet-lovable mutant hero, Toxie, who stands up to bullies and corruption with irreverent zeal – doing good and brutally mauling evil in no-holds-barred fashion. Opening to a tame reception in 1984, the film eventually became a cult success a year after its release, preceding several sequels in 1989 and 2000. The Toxic Avenger also expanded into a stage musical production, a children’s cartoon TV series, and a Marvel Comic. […]
