Tony Jaa is taking China’s Youku streaming app to task with the November 8 release of Striking Rescue. Desperado helmer Cheng Siyi directs the international action star for the story of a harrowing descent into the criminal for a Muay Thai master out for vengeance after witnessing the brutal murders of his wife and daughter. The film also stars Shi Yanneng, Hong Junjia, Phillip Keung, and Chen Duoyi. I reckon it’ll be about a year before this finds some space in the U.S. – namely Well Go USA’s Hi-YAH! streamer where Asian action titles like these are well suited for presentation. In the meantime, peep the latest promo below. Hat tip to @thatphatsamuraiguy for the heads up!
December is chock-filled with some Asian action delights over at Well Go USA’s niche streaming channel, Hi-YAH!, and the company has a brand new promo which you can view below, firstly introducing footage from Channel Choi’s Kowloon Walled City (2021), starring Shi Yan Neng (a.k.a. Xing Yu) as a migrant from Dongbei who finds himself up against evil forces to protect friends within the notorious city. The action continues with two Jet Li headliners beginning with The Legend Of The Red Dragon (a.k.a. New Legend Of Shaolin) (1994) from directors Corey Yuen and Wong Jing, with Li joined by then-rising star Xie Miao for the story of a heroic father/son martial arts duo forced to mitigate poverty, and the exploits of a con woman and her mother while journeying to avenge the destruction of their village against a traitor during the government crackdown on Shaolin. Li will also be seen […]
Action thriller S.M.A.R.T. Chase joins Orlando Bloom along with Lynn Hung, Simon Yan and more later this month!
Going for a much more commercial approach, UK outlet Signature is tackling the early 2018 rollout of Charles Martin’s latest action thriller now titled The Shanghai Job. Flickering Myth premiered an official trailer this week for the Orlando Bloom headliner which also has Ip Man 1 and 2 cohorts Lynn Xiong, Simon Yam and Xing Yu starring. Washed-up private security agent Danny Stratton has been reduced to low level bodyguarding operations, after a botched job when a Van Gogh painting in his care was stolen. He gets a chance to restore his reputation when he’s given the rare opportunity to escort a valuable Chinese antique out of Shanghai. In the course of the mission he is ambushed, and, with the safety of the woman he loves in jeopardy, Danny has to work with his team of experts to save her, whilst also outsmarting the devious mastermind behind the heist. UK […]
*This contest has expired. Pre-Order Iron Protector On Blu-ray Today! While flawed in some aspects, Yue Song’s 2013 action drama, The King Of The Streets, if nothing else, was a daring display of the fledgeling actor and director in his element as actor and martial artist. The hype never fell short in the three years that followed as Song’s sophmore effort, Super Bodyguard, began its campaign ahead of its festival screenings prior to, and after opening in China. The film even gained reception in New York City’s cult Asian festival scene last year – something I would’ve liked to have attended but ultimately couldn’t. Thankfully the film is getting a proper U.S. rollout promising Asian film fans something to treat themselves with this Fall, now branded with the title, Iron Protector, for its September 5 release on Blu-Ray and Digital HD from Well Go USA. After the death of his […]
Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings franchise co-star, actor Orlando Bloom’s most recent starring and producing venture with heist/retrieval action thriller, S.M.A.R.T. Chase, hit an unfortunate legal stumble last year with production company Das Films. It’s never a fun gig to endure with a production being the launchpad of a new banner but it’s still one that BlissBloom Productions is counting on as a good first push and legal matters aside, the casting here will be a likely huge sell for moviegoers next to its action and spectacle. The film itself hails from Night Fare helmer Julien Seri who flexes his share of muscle behind the lens for Bloom as he leads the cast in the role of Danny Stratton, an underdog private security agent whose team, S.M.A.R.T., is propelled into a high-speed chase throughout Shanghai for a valuable Chinese antique in lieu of a deadly conspiracy […]
If there were ever an actor worthy of big screen appeal as a villain, instantly it would be actor Louis Koo as the heinous, murdering son of a General in Benny Chan’s latest home release prospect, Call Of Heroes. Action legend Sammo Hung himself directed the action headlining the riveting drama telling of a group of skilled warriors uniting against a coming threat with actors Eddie Peng, Wu Jing, Sean Lau and Liu Kai Chi delivering even more of the film’s best performances. My personal favorite action scene takes place in the second half which takes place on a bridge – a scene also exemplary of how to design action to permeate around the drama, lending further weight and credit to the film’s overall story and script. These are just a few points I’ll leave off here about the film for you to mull over while I’m more than pleased […]
Currently underway is the production of Night Fare helmer Julien Seri’s latest production, Smart Chase: Fire And Earth. The film subsequently marks the start of a producing venture for its lead star, actor Orlando Bloom in China via his BlissBloom Productions banner following the film’s announcement back in June. Elephant White (2011) scribe Kevin Bernhardt provides the logline which reads of a washed-up private security agent who gets ambushed as he attempts to escort a pricey Chinese antique out of Shanghai. Special ID (2013) and The Great Wall (2016) co-star Jing Tian was also announced to star in the film next to actors Leo Wu, Cao Kefan and up-and-comer Liu Enyou, while Asian Film Strike confirms the presences of Hong Kong actor Simon Yam and South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae (Assassination, Operation Chromite) in his second stint in a Chinese production since starring in Li Jun’s summer thriller, Tik Tok. […]
Call the film what you will at this point, but the narrative is mostly clear on actor and filmmaker Yue Song’s latest sophomore outing, Super Bodyguard. Here, Song leads the cast from his own script which sees a young and gifted martial artist forced to adhere to his skillset following his journey to reunite with his fellow apprentice in the wake of their master’s death. Also starring are Collin Chou with Shi Yanneng and Jiang Baocheng, the latter two reuniting three years since their 2013 bout in Law Wing-Cheong’s The Wrath Of Vajra, which feels like pretty hefty casting for someone who has only done two movies. Though, honestly, none of it feels moot considering what we’ve already witnessed in earlier trailers and all the behind-the-scenes anarchy with Song on the frontlines and seeing his hybridized vision all the way through, and damn near losing an eye at that. Of course, […]
In the months since unveiling at least two trailers for his new genre-blending kung fu hybrid, Super Bodyguard, it’s arguable that star, writer and director Yue Song’s hubris may seem like more than larger-than-life confidence. Captions dubbing the film as the first best martial arts movie in twenty years with neither wires/CGI/(stuntmen?), and a lead signaling the second coming of Bruce Lee would stand out to anyone and you can check it out here to see what I’m talking about. At any rate, the film is finally on deck for a July 15 release in China as the latest sophomore effort from Song since the 2013 action drama, King Of The Streets, and with all the hope for a wider release thereafter. The first trailers were amazing with Song starring as a gifted martial artist forced to take on swarms of enemies and plot twists as the newly-hired bodyguard of […]
You have to have a lot of confidence about yourself as a filmmaker to stake your claim as the next Bruce Lee. Many would normally frown or, to say the least, lend some capacity of speculation to that matter, but that doesn’t hugely appear to be the case for actor and filmmaker Yue Song whose veracity as the latest in upcoming action stardom is a work that clearly speaks for itself. Thus, when you look at a trailer for a film like his newest, Super Bodyguard, you’re looking at a piece of work that appears to bet everything its got. Song did the same with the 2013 action drama, King Of The Streets and with a distinctive approach to action unmarred by wirework or trick cinematography, presents a pill very much easy to swallow. It takes Song’s kind of caliber to do what he does, and you should also consider […]
Multi-faceted actor and filmmaker Yue Song earned some fair attention in 2012 with his freshman action feature, The King Of The Streets. Since then, the empassioned martial arts filmmaker, producer and rising star has been busy on a two-year production stint with his latest testimony in ground breaking, authentic and hard hitting action with his latest, The Bodyguard, and thankfully the film’s festival and market circulation late last year has earned it some much-deserved attention for Song in the process. SYNOPSIS: Wu-Lin is the successor of ancient clan “Iron Kick”. After the death of his master, Wu-Lin left the village and go to the city to look for his fellow apprentice JiangLi. He turn out become the bodyguard of Fei-Fei, the daughter of the wealthy Li. A group of mobster led by JiangLi attempts to kidnap Fei-Fei, Wu-Lin failied to stop them and brutally crushed, but managed to survive. Wu-Lin […]
Not that these are necessary really, but promotional pictures are always nice to see, and those for Teddy Chen‘s most recent London film festival success story, Kung Fu Jungle, is no exception. The film stars martial arts action hero Donnie Yen as one of the most trusted members of the martial arts community, sent to prison for killing an opponent only to be summoned at the behest of the police when a serial killer targets a number martial artists in the city. Deadly shapes between fighters on opposite sides of the martial code collide in this newest thriller which opens at the end of this week in Hong Kong and China. Charlie Yeung and Wang Baoqiang also star, along with Michelle Bai, Shi Yanneng, Fan Siu-Wong and many more. Check out the artwork and photos below!
