Coming in November in theaters and IMAX!
“Production of a new Godzilla film by writer, director, and VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki has been greenlit” according to a new press announcement last Friday. Production details are underwraps, while news on the new movie comes following the latest push for this weekend’s re-release of Yamazaki’s Godzilla: Minus One, in select theaters, as announced on Thursday, marking the kaiju IP’s 70th anniversary. Godzilla: Minus One proved to be the highest-grossing Japanese film in U.S. box office history, and the #3 top-grossing foreign film in U.S. Box Office History, earning more than $115 million at the global box office. The film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, making Godzilla: Minus One the first film in Godzilla’s franchise history to be recognized by the Academy with a nomination or win. The film also exists in a refurbished black-and-white edition also known as Godzilla: Minus One/Minus Color. Check out the announcement videos […]
Did you enjoy Takashi Yamazaki’s latest entry into the famed Toho franchise that is Godzilla Minus One? If so, then be advised that a new black-and-white version is well on the horizon. News on its U.S. release remains pending but Japan audiences will get to see this one on January 12. I haven’t seen the first version myself yet but I can imagine the excitement. To add, that a monochrome version is coming to fans will undoubtedly be a testament to fans’ enjoyment. The new teaser is out as of Tuesday as well, and the effect is certainly pleasing as it is appealing. More from Yamazaki from the film’s official website can be interpreted below. I used Google Translate for this, so, do with that what you will. We are now able to announce “Godzilla-1.0/C”, which we have been working on for a long time. Rather than just making it […]
Arriving just in time to mark its 70th anniversary, the latest devastating chapter in the Godzilla franchise has an official trailer for Godzilla: Minus One, following a teaser which premiered in July. The film is also set to close this year’s 36th edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival ahead of its Japan release on November 3, with a nationwide U.S. rollout starting December 1. After the war, Japan has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state. Against the most desperate situation in the history of Japan, how — and with whom —will Japan stand up to it? Godzilla: Minus One is written, directed and VFX-scored by none other than Takashi Yamazaki (Returner, The Eternal Zero, The Great War Of Archimedes). The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
Hollywood and Japan continue to bear their own dueling iterations of Godzilla franchise, and with Adam Wingard still on deck for next year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire over at Legendary. As for the latter, it’ll be Returner and The Great War Of Archimedes helmer Takashi Yamazaki hailing a November 3 release for Toho’s newest Reiwa era-set incarnation, Godzilla: Minus One. The start of production was last March before finally breaking news at last year’s Godzilla Fest, with plans to otherwise commemorate the franchise’s 70th anniversary by next year. According to Toho International’s Koji Ueda in a new piece at Forbes, Godzilla: Minus One will share continuity with Toho’s previous film, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s 2016 with box office smash hit, Shin Godzilla. “Set in a post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force, which you already […]
I stan guys like director Takashi Yamazaki, so it’s wholly a welcome feat that he’s being tapped to direct a new Godzilla movie coming on November 3, 2023. The Returner, Parasyte: Part 1 and Part 2 helmer’s new feature effort is the latest in succession from the 2016 installment of Shin Godzilla from Shinji Higuchi and Yusuke Ishida, as well as several recent animated features on Netflix, and the current big screen Monsterverse out of Legendary which is now on par for its own Apple TV+ series temp-titled Godzilla and The Titans. 2023, simply put, will be another perfect year to be a monster movie fanatic. Toho also released the official graphic which you can view below: Read more at ANN!
Part of your viewing repertoire should at some point include at least one or two Takashi Yamazaki films. I’ve been a fan of his since 2002’s Returner and it’s been great seeing him still get around with the Parasyte adaptations and going to bat with Masaki Suda for pre-WWII epic, The Great War Of Archimedes, and now he’s back and breathing life once more with family adventure, Ghostbook, based on a 2013 children’s novel from Kodansha. Sixth grade elementary school students Kazuki, Taichi, and Sunny have a “wish” they really want to make it come true. The boys pray earnestly with their hands at the shrine. Then, suddenly, the wish-granting “Ghost Book” resonates with them and gives them a test. Guided by the magic of the Ghost Book, the boys and their homeroom teacher, Ms. Yohko, wander into a different world where ghosts live. The five try to escape from […]

While my own anime intake since 2016 has slowed down greatly in recent memory, that hasn’t discouraged me from plotting further viewing, and rest assured, I know I have my work cut out for me when it comes to Lupin the Third. The franchise, hailing from Monkey Punch fifty years since the birth of the manga and subsequent anime, returns to screens with Lupin III: The First, from Returner and Parasyte 1 & 2 director Takashi Yamazaki. The iconic “gentleman thief” Lupin III returns in an action-packed, continent-spanning adventure, as Lupin III and his colorful underworld companions race to uncover the secrets of the mysterious Bresson Diary, before it falls into the hands of a dark cabal that will stop at nothing to resurrect the Third Reich. The gang undertakes trap-filled tombs, aerial escapades and daring prison escapes with the trademark wit and visual finesse that have made LUPIN THE 3RD one […]
