Next week will mark the digital and disc release of director Wuershan’s award-winning epic fantasy Creation Of The Gods I: Kingdom Of Storms. I look forward to reviewing this title by then, and in the meantime, I have two Blu-Rays that I’m happily giving away to readers. All you need to do is email me at fcsyndicate@outlook.com with some insight on some of your favorite lore-based fantasy and wuxia. I’ve seen my share, but there’s always an extra space to fill and titles I haven’t seen, so if you have something in mind, consider it a recommendation. In turn, both selected winners will receive an email confirmation with a request for a mailing address, with updates and a tracking number to follow suit. Good luck! More on the movie below: CREATION OF THE GODS I: KINGDOM OF STORMS stars Kris Phillips (The Monkey King 2), Li Xuejian (The Wandering Earth […]
On the cusp of raking in up to $375 million dollars for its local release, director Wuershan’s Creation Of The Gods I: Kingdom Of Storms will enjoy a North American release later this month from Well Go USA. The film will have special IMAX previews at select theaters from September 20 before rolling out in theaters on September 22. The first installment of the trilogy’s legendary tale — which takes place amidst the furor of mythical ancient wars between humans, immortals and monsters — depicts the rise and fall of King Zhou, the villainous final ruler of the Shang dynasty. After falling prey to the whims of a conniving fox demon and his own thirst for power, the king devolves into a brutal tyrant who incurs the very wrath of heaven for his misdeeds. After seemingly never-ending strings of bloody conflicts, humans and supernatural beings alike will wage a desperate […]
While there have been multiple adaptations and iterations of the 16th century “Fengshen Yanyi” novel for film and TV, Wu Er Shan (Mojin: The Lost Legend, Painted Skin: The Resurrection) is making his most daring play yet to be the filmmaking face of the franchise. Thus, after six years and with some of the highest expectations ever set for a Chinese film production, Creation Of The Gods: Kingdom Of Storms. Based on the most well-known classical fantasy novel of China, Fengshenyanyi, the trilogy is a magnificent eastern high fantasy epic that recreates the prolonged mythical wars between humans, immortals and monsters, which happened more than three thousand years ago. A teaser first arose back in 2019, and of course we can all understand the extent to which its dated 2020 release at the time was delayed, like most films that year. A small price to pay nonetheless, and with a […]
The past decade has definitely seen its share of stalled franchises and even a few releaeses, and for varying reasons. China is no stranger to these occurences with seeming overproduction and heavy-handed censorship that has so often stifled these releases, and even in a few cases where confidence all but dissipates. The most definitive example of this that I can recall was the kibosh put almost instantaneously on Peng Zhang’s 2018 feature debut, Asura, which, if the rumors are correct, could finally make way to a streaming release in the mainland. We’ll see if that sticks, while it’s also worth noting the industry there, as fickle as it is, is not without a sense of occasional tenacity. Enter director Wuershan‘s latest feat now sampling with a teaser for the inaugural 2020 installment of Fengshen, a new trilogy boasting a three-billion yuan budget, and a sizeable load of intricate craftsmanship and […]
Directors Koan Hui and co. spent a great deal of time and energy bringing an ensemble effort to advance a full-throttle adaptation of Chinese folklore literary, Fengshen Yanyi with last year’s League Of Gods. That film is now poised for a home release in North America on August 1 from Sony while folks keen on the genre and source material alike may be pleased to learn that new efforts are on the horizon for a fresh new adapatation releasing in the next several years. Leave that to Painted Skin: The Resurrection (2013) and Mojin: The Lost Legend (2015) helmer Wu Ershan now headlining as director of the ambitious new God Of War trilogy from Beijing Culture Media. Attached are screenwriters Ran Ping (Painted Skin: The Resurrection) and James Schamus (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Lord Of The Rings trilogy producer Barry M. Osborne and executive producer Bill Kong among those listed […]
Director Wuershan dazzled at the box office back in 2015 with the 80’s set action adventure comedy, Mojin: The Lost Legend. Based on a 2006 novel by Zhang Muye, the subject of searching for lost national treasures may have played a role in garnering the attention it did in China as well as the success drawn from its IMAX releases. At any rate, it became a box office success ultimately debuting second to J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This is evidently opened up prospects for a sequel with word now circulating that Silent Witness helmer Fei Xing will direct next installment for a 2018 release pending. (H/T: Asian Film Strike) Details are scarce right now, but if you’re curious about the fervor behind this latest gem starring Shu Qi, Chen Kun and Angelababy, do keep note of the forthcoming home release from Well Go USA on May 3. […]
So, Star Wars: The Force Awakens just happens to be the biggest movie in the world this weekend, which may explain partly why you might find it a little difficult to catch right away unless you bought your tickets early. But, don’t fret – you do have other options available and one such includes director Wuershan’s newest, Mojin: The Lost Legend, which also delivers its share of visual spectacle worthy of a theatrical feat to enjoy. SYNOPSIS: Some people have a special gift. They’re able to travel between the realms of the Living and the Dead…and Tomb Raiding can mean Big Business. Welcome to the world of the Mojin. Based on the #1 Bestselling series of novels and starring Shu Qi, Chen Kun, Angelababy, and Huang Bo, MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND pits a trio of legendary grave robbers against scholars, rivals, and the law – until an offer from a […]
It’s been somewhat of a season of “firsts” for me here and there, and such is the case with director Wuershan‘s newest film, Mojin: The Lost Legend. I don’t exactly know what the effect would have been if the production company simply left its original title, “The Ghouls”, although the new title makes sense and gives meaning to the story as it unfolds. The film focuses thematically on an age-old clandestine group of tomb raiders who once existed for the purpose of dig for treasure in order to feed China’s poor during wartime. Based on Zhang Muye’s novel “Ghost Blows Out The Light”, actor Chen Kun plays a discouraged former member of said group, the Mojin, alongside Huang Bo as they struggle to hustle on the streets of 1980’s New York. The story takes an intriguing turn when a mysterious image of an enchanted stone, the Equinox Flower, reappears, fanning […]
Formerly titled The Ghouls, director Wuershan‘s latest, Mojin: The Lost Legend has an official U.S. trailer out this week. You can pretty much guess where this adventure goes judging by its artwork or its initial teasers and trailers, and that’s not to take away from the spectacular visuals and scope we get in turn. Plus the sight of actress Shu Qi leading the cast is always an endearing one. SYNOPSIS: Some people have a special gift. The latest trailer for Wuershan’s Mojin: The Lost Legend is currently circulating online with tons of promise. Headlined with a stellar cast led by actress Shu Qi, the film encircles a story set in the 80’s about a former soldier, his partner, and an American archeologist who fall victim to a curse while infiltrating an ancient grave. IMAX Corporation unveiled a press release last week on October 14 announcing the film’s IMAX release and theatrical date which you may read about below, though I imagine this one is being groomed for a release overseas as well, in which case, let’s hope! IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX), together with IMAX China Holding, Inc. (“IMAX China”, HKG: 1970), today announced that the 3D action-adventure film Mojin-The Lost Legend – a co-production between Wanda Media Co.
