REVELATIONS Gets A Chilling Teaser Trailer From The Minds Behind ‘Hellbound’ And ‘Children Of Men’
Coming in March on Netflix!
Coming in March on Netflix!
I’ve yet to familiarize myself with Takashi Yamazaki’s take on mangaka Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasyte books with Shota Sometani starring. With time and luck I can hopefully snag those discs, while Netflix is certainly getting on the bandwagon with its own expansion of the IP in the form of Parasyte: The Grey. As fans know it, the world of Parastye is set in one where mankind finds itself invaded by alien parasytes seeking human hosts. Per Netflix: “The plot revolves around Su-in (Jeon So-nee), a woman grappling with her new reality of coexisting with a parasite, and the relentless Team Grey, a group committed to fighting against these unidentified parasitic life-forms. “…These parasites, intent on multiplying, control humans and mimic their behavior while posing a sinister threat. Amidst this looming situation, Kang-woo (Koo Kyo-hwan) is shown in the middle of his search for his missing sibling while hiding from a parasite […]
Barring the excitement drawn from the initial teaser last month, the official trailer is now online for director Yeon Sang-ho’s newest venture, Jung_E. I haven’t been this excited about South Korean sci-fi on the streamer since Space Sweepers and I can’t wait until this launches on January 20. The trailer reveals more about our heroine and the story as it aims to reveal, and it’s definitely brimming with a bit of sci-fi inspiration of its own. You can see it if you’re a fan of certain anime properties. There’s no denying it, nor is there any for the poignance of seeing actress Kang Soo-youn in what will be her posthumous screen bow. Watch the trailer and dive right in!
Celebrated director Yeon Sang-ho (Train To Busan, Psychokinesis, Peninsula) has kept up nicely with his relationship with Netflix, particularly with his ongoing series efforts with Hellbound and the upcoming first season of Parasyte: The Grey based on the manga. The same also goes for his next sci-fi feature effort with Jung_E, starring Kim Hyun-joo in her first movie role since her fourth film appearance in Kim Do-hyuk’s Shin Suk-ki blues before long hauling her steady career in television for various networks, including this month’s SBS premiere of Trolley. JUNG_E portrays a desolated Earth in the 22nd century that is no longer inhabitable due to climate change. Amid the chaos, an internal war breaks out in the shelter built for human survival. Victory – meaning the end of the war – now hinges on finding a way to clone the legendary mercenary JUNG_E into a scalable robot. The show teased “a […]
The world of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s popular sci-fi/horror manga Parasyte is returning to the screen, care of Korean director Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan, Psychokenesis)! Parasyte: The Grey has been announced to be in production exclusively for Netflix. Set in a world where human-eating alien parasites arrive on Earth and begin taking over their host’s brains, this new live action series takes place in Korea, with a brand new storyline and characters. Jeon So-nee (Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage, Ghost Walk) leads the cast as Jeon Su-in, a parasite host. Much like Shinichi Izumi, from the original Parasyte manga, when the parasite fails to take over her brain, the two must learn to manage their new, strange co-existence. Joining her on the cast is Koo Kyo-hwan and Lee Jung-hyun, both whom have worked with the director previously. Koo Kyo-hwan plays Seol Kang-woo, whom tracks down parasites in an effort to find […]
Kim Yong Wan‘s 2020 tvN supernatural drama, The Cursed, now comes full circle with a feature length continuation set to release on July 28 with CJ Entertainment’s The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey. Read that title again, and then take into account that this film is also written by Yeon Sang-ho, the man who brought zombie film fandom to fruition with a trilogy of zombie thrillers, notably 2016’s Train To Busan and its sequel, Peninsula. If the undead are what you crave for your horror needs, it looks like The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey is right up your alley. A mysterious serial murder cases take area through jaechaui (lifeless our bodies that have risen from the dead and in a position to speak). These bodies are manipulated by a person. The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey stars Uhm Ji-won (The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale), Jeong Ji-so (Parasite) and Kim In-kwon (Battle […]
Ah, zombies. A staple of any horror fans diet. The fun thing about zombies is the range: they can be slow and steady, fast and violent, but no matter the kind of zombie, they are always entertaining. Our friends at Well Go USA gifted me with a copy of Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula before its official release and it is a much welcome addition to my zombie movie collection. What’s that? You haven’t seen Train to Busan? No worries. Although Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula is marketed as a sequel and references the zombie outbreak that began in the first film, there are no mentions of the previous films characters; it is actually considered to be a stand alone film. Taking place four years after the zombie virus has spread throughout South Korea, Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula follows people in Hong Kong as they try to survive while […]
Yeon Sang-ho’s sprawling hit zombie franchise, Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula, was a fashionable and entertaining road thriller in the action horror millieu following his 2016 predecessors, Train To Busan and Seoul Station. You’re welcome to check out my review for some perspective. In the meantime, how fast a new installment arrives remains to be seen, while fans in the U.S. can now await the undead invasion when the film heads to home screens with a Digital release on October 27 from Well Go USA. The Planos, Texas-based firm is also slotting a 4K Ultra Blu-ray Combo Pack, a Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD release from November 24 (with features such as a BTS featurette, cast/crew interviews and an all-new English dub), in addition to a 2021 release pact with AMC’s horror streamer, Shudder. Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated […]
2020 seems to be the year for optimism when it comes to sequels (see Bad Boys For Life and The Debt Collectors). Not all movie fans have a flexible take on a particular kind of story, and directors like Yeon Sang-ho have invariably made note of this fact, and so went the sounds of many a mind blown when news of a sequel to his 2016 film, Train To Busan, was well under way. Enter Peninsula, the latest chapter in Yeon’s sprawling zombie saga that dives right into the ensuing collapse of Korea, introducing Marine Captain Jung-seok (Gang Dong-won), whose own life is about to take a truly dark turn as he attempts to join the exile with his family via naval ship. Chaos suddenly erupts on the ship, forcing a detour from Japan to Hong Kong, where for the next four years, Jung-seok and brother-in-law Chul-min (Kim Do-yoon) are […]
The big fuss of late among kung fu fans over news of a hopeful Ricky Lau-inspired vampire project aside, director Yeon Sang-ho‘s next push will be Hellbound, a new series announced on Wednesday by Netflix. Confirmed cast additions include Yoo Ah-in (Burning), Park Jeong-min (Time To Hunt), Kim Hyun-joo (KBS2 series The Miracle We Met), Won Jin-ah (Long Live The King) and Yang Ik-june (Bad Guys: Vile City). Yeon will direct from a script co-written with Choi Gyu-seok, author of the popular webtoon Songgot. Produced by Lezhin Studio (Lucid Dream), Hellbound centers on angels of death come to Earth to condemn people to hell, an act seen by the cult members of the New Truth Church as the will of the divine to embolden their own religious crusade. Netflix further details the casting as follows, with Ah-in in the role of Jeong Jin-su, the charismatic and mysterious head of the […]
Yeon Sang-ho’s Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula will be heading to 150 theatrical screens throughout North America beginning August 7, in a major deal for Well Go USA, which also gives AMC’s Shudder exclusive streaming rights in early 2021. “Peninsula is one of the most anticipated horror movie sequels of the last decade and exactly the kind of film Shudder members are hungry for,” said Craig Engler, Shudder’s general manager. Yeon Sang-ho set the bar for zombie movies with Train to Busan and its prequel Seoul Station, and we’re thrilled to be the home of his new masterpiece—and the only place where movie lovers will be able to stream this outstanding trilogy together.” The news comes on the heels of a planned re-release of the film’s predecessor, 2016’s Train To Busan, which will also include a first look at Peninsula. The film was a soaring hit following Yeon’s animated Cannes […]
For what it’s worth, Yeon Sang-ho is poised to host one of the hottest film summers ever with his long-awaited sequel, Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula. For this, he’ll have been more to bring to the table very soon with Netflix now readying Hellbound, which he will be penning and spearheading with illustrator Choi Gyu-seok. Hellbound will actually be the working title for the new original series going forward. In the series, people fight to survive the chaotic conditions that ensue when a group of religious fanatics emerge to worship supernatural events where afterlife beings enter out of nowhere to condemn people to hell. The series further rejoins Yeon with Lezhin Studio since production on this year’s tvN series, The Cursed. Choi is also the author of Songgot, a webtoon that was adapted as a television drama in 2015 titled Awl, directed by Kim Suk-yoon. From Netflix: The duo will […]
We’re living in some pretty damn surreal times right now, so it’s understandable to be perplexed about the current state of things, especially cinema. Well Go USA’s arrival on Wednesday evening with an official trailer for Yeon Sang-ho’s Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula, comes a moment that seems almost providential as it is coincidental, but don’t read to much into it. I’m not really into stirring another facetious conspiracy theory, especially since we’re not fighting zombies. Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of […]
Psychokinesis helmer Yeon Sang-ho’s forthcoming zombie follow-up, Peninsula, was acquired in Berlin by Well Go USA according to Screendaily‘s EFM coverage. The film, currently in post-production, serves as a shared-universe successor to his 2016 hit zombie opus, Train To Busan, and its corresponding animated Cannes trailblazer, Seoul Station. Produced by Redpeter Films and set four years after Train To Busan with twice that film’s budget, Peninsula stars Gang Dong-won and Lee Jung-hyun in the story of a former soldier who finds himself on a mission back into the ravaged country where there are still survivors. Contents Panda is repping the film in Berlin whose sales extend to well over a dozen territories globally outside the U.S., with Next Entertainment World (NEW) reportedly planning a post-Cannes summer release in Korea. Esther Yeung, general manager, head of Sales & Distribution at Edko Films, said: “We’re thrilled to be joining again Yeon Sang-ho’s […]
Award-winning Train To Busan director Yeon Sang-Ho is far from finished with the apocalyptic zombieverse he initiated in 2016. Jean Noh’s Monday report at Screendaily is just the latest bit of confirmation we’re getting on the acclaimed Train To Busan helmer’s efforts toward a sequel, two years since garnering festival praise and box office approval in South Korea and through Asia. That same year also saw updates of Gaumont’s own acquisition of the film for a possible English-language remake. Previous reports of sequel hopes have seen actor Gong Yoo weigh in from time to time, although news now indicates the film, tentatively titled Bando (a.k.a. Peninsula), will be just a continuation Train To Busan and set in the same universe with a new cast of characters. More to the point via Screendaily: “It is an extension of Train To Busan, after the virus has spread throughout Korea, but the characters […]
Director Yeon Sang-Ho left quite the desired dent in 2016 with multi-acclaimed zombie thriller, Train To Busan, and its animated prequel, Seoul Station. He’s now seguing into a fresh new take on the superhero genre to some degree and with none other than The Target and The Admiral: Roaring Currents actor Ryoo Seung-Ryong for the new comedy, Psychokinesis. The film will find its footing firstly in Korean cinemas this month from Next Entertainment World as we observe the story of a man who suddenly discovers he has telekinetic abilities. The story soon finds him on a mission to rescue his daughter from an unforeseen accident too and judging by the trailer, he probably won’t be taking any wheels as it appears he’ll be… flying? At least that’s what the trailer teases with Office co-star Park Jung-Min, and Train To Busan cohorts – actresses Shim Eun-Kyung and Jung Yu-Mi, and The […]
Animator Yeon Sang-Ho made his live-action debut this with the hit action horror, Train To Busan. The film was a festival favorite during the summer and has since earned the favor of many a critic and moviegoer, in addition to a raft of studios competing for the English-language remake rights in a few months prior to its release. As it turns out, according to Variety, the victor now lies with Gaumont, beating out Canal+, Sony and other studios for the remake rights. Starring Gong Yoo and Ma Dong-Seok as a follow-up to Yeon’s 2014 animated movie, Seoul Station, the film centered around a father struggling to reconnect with his young daughter, only to get swept into an epic battle for survival when a mysterious viral outbreak consumes the Busan-bound bullet train they’re on, turning its passengers into rabid zombies. per Variety: “We are more than happy to start our business […]
The past 24 hours have been electric with echoes of a possible reimagining of filmmaker Yeon Sang-Ho’s hit zombie thriller, Train To Busan. That news now comes by way of THR‘s Heat Vision column who report of a bidding war now underway between Sony, 20th Century Fox, Gaumont, Canal+ and EuropaCorp and others pursuing the rights to the film. As a follow-up to Yeon’s 2014 animated movie, Seoul Station, Train To Busan sees actor Gong Yoo (The Suspect) as a father struggling to reconnect with his young daughter, only to get swept into an epic battle for survival when a mysterious viral outbreak consumes the Busan-bound bullet train they’re on. The film opened in South Korea and in select territories in the U.S. last month, and much to our delight as shown in the film’s expedient box office returns, beating Jon M. Chu’s Now You See Me 2 and the […]
Director: Yeon Sang Ho Lead cast: Gong Yoo, Ma Dong Seok, Jung Yu Mi, Kim Soo An Seok Woo and his daughter take a high speed train to Busan. Just as the doors are about to close, a passenger infected with a mysterious virus dashes aboard and soon feeds on one of the attendants, causing a chain reaction, and quickly transforming the potential father-daughter journey time into a zombie fest on wheels. You can run to the nearby car, but how far can you really run on a moving bullet train? When assessing Train To Busan, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a zombie movie; it’s meant to deliver entertainment value, not intellectual or emotional enlightenment. Once I came to that agreement with myself, I found that I actually enjoyed it a lot. Though I must admit there were a couple scenes that tugged at my feelings, […]
