In Memoriam: Ringo Lam (1955-2018)

Dim Sum Daily is reporting that celebrated Hong Kong film auteur Ringo Lam abruptly passed away on Saturday at his home in Hong Kong. According to the article, his wife called an ambulance though Lam was pronounced dead by then, while an autopsy report remains to be seen per the details of his death. It’s a devastating blow to the world of Asian film fandom in the wake of Lam’s legendary career in cinema which began in 1976, with Lam taking the helm for titles like Espirit d’amor in 1983, and serial action comedy Aces Go Places IV in 1986. A year later he would set fire to the genre beginning with gritty Hong Kong actioners like City On Fire and Full Contact starring Chow Yun-Fat. DRAGON KINGDOM: Simon Wells’ Latest Fantasy Action Sequel Out Now In The UK

Director Simon Wells’ latest sword-and-shield fantasy thriller underwent its share of title changes. Now brandishing the title Dragon Kingdom following suit from last year’s Knights Of The Damned, the film is now available to on iTunes in the UK with a DVD release also in tow for January. To save their Kingdom from the Dark Lord’s army, a group of warriors must travel through the Forbidden lands fighting the fearsome monsters of the Dark Kingdom, a land that swallows all who enter, in order to rescue their King. ‘Dragon Kingdom’ is an action-packed adventure featuring dragons, monsters and ferocious battles. A U.S. release is also in store courtesy of High Octane Pictures in the coming year with a new and returning cast that lists actors Ross O’Hennessy and Ben Loyd-Holmes, actresses Rebecca Dyson-Smith, Zara Phythian, Jessica-Jane Stafford, Jemma Moore and actor Mike Mitchell.

As I’m writing this (by which I hope to be done with at one point when this piece airs), I have two shortfilm reviews, a screener review and more articles to focus on before the year is out. Throughout all this, I’ve had my mind on what I wanted to post for my annual summation piece knowing I hadn’t gotten to enjoy or accomplish everything I wanted or intended to. Indeed, I’ve had some amazing times this year between birthdays and singing at Karaoke bars – at least twice this year. You can now head over anywhere online listing the forthcoming titles of January for Netflix, including at EW. Interestingly, Lee Seung-won’s Revenger appears to be among the lot with a date set for January 15 which should serve nicely for the martial arts action crowd following its release in South Korea earlier this month. From Little Big Pictures, Revenger film hails the return of actor and martial artist Bruce Khan, back from obscurity since Kang Young-Man’s 2005 fantasy actioner, The Last Eve, and his appearance in the 2012 KBS2 series manhwa drama, The Bridal Mask. China Movie Channel And HBO Asia Set February For Two New ‘Master’ Kung Fu Flicks

On Monday at an event in Beijing, China Movie Channel and HBO Asia have since re-officiated their Asia-exclusive partnership re: their slate of martial arts films two years after the success of Master of the Drunken Fist: Beggar So and Master of the Shadow-less Kick: Wong Kei-Ying. Director Guo Jianyong, who shepherded both films, is back at the helm for Master of the White Crane Fist: Wong Yan-Lam, a legendary martial artist who biographically shares history as one of the “Ten Tigers Of Kwangtung”. The film will air on both platforms on February 20, 2019, followed by Master of the Nine Dragon Fist: Wong Ching-Ho from director Si Xiaodong on February 21. Actor Marc Natoli has officially come aboard the cast in Eric Red’s upcoming survival thriller, No Man’s Ridge, which just signaled its casting on Friday hours earlier attaching actor and producer John Fallon. The three are further joined as of Friday by actor Nick Principe, best known for his role in Ravi Dhar’s 2014 actioner, American Muscle.
