Grindstone/Lionsgate Releases PAY BACK On DVD And Digital This April

At some point the good folks at Lionsgate managed to snag the rights to director Fu Xi’s 2013 action crime thriller, Pay Back. As such, the film is arriving in the U.S. on DVD and Digital HD on April 5 and they’ve since cut a trailer you can view below featuring Francis Ng and action star Louis Fan. SYNOPSIS: When mafia fall guy Zhang Jin finally gets released from prison, he’s nearly assassinated. In an effort to survive, Zhang becomes entangled in a conspiracy, linking his fate with unlikely allies and turning friends into enemies. Zhang must discover the identity of the assassin before he gets murdered, without plunging himself back into a life of crime. Also starring are Lam Suet, Deng Ziyi and action veteran Cynthia Khan. Not gonna lie, I rarely follow MMA, point in fact, I sleep more than anything on weekend nights, although clearly Saturday night was much more lively for fans of Miesha Tate after taking Holly Holm’s title at UFC 196. Yes, egos are bruised a bit this weekend and fittingly, it’s just the kind of fight fervor that filmmaker Rob Hawk relies on. Hence, get ready to catch Tate and Holm on the set of the the new MMA revenge drama, Fight Valley following its production last year. Both are making their screen debut next to actress Susie Celek and Strikeforce champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Justiano, all of whom can now be seen in the latest official trailer from Breaking Glass Pictures. The film arrives this summer while a date remains pending.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Street Society and Badoet helmer Awi Suryadi who is no stranger to the martial arts genre himself. Suffice to say, it’s great to welcome him back once more in the wake of his latest appeal to the fanbase with the new proof teaser for Indonesia’s premiere coming-of-age MMA drama, Unleashed, which should gain some interest in a possible feature film drama or a TV series if all goes as planned. Square Enix's THIEF Goes Under The Live-Action Pen

More live action video game films are abound and as of Deadline‘s latest report, that list now includes Square Enix’s latest re-adapted 2014 video game, Thief. Straight Up Films, the production company behind the latest release of Jane Got A Gun starring Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton, is moving forward with Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Adrian Askarieh also producing. Adam Mason and Simon Boyes are leading point on the script based on the game which initially launch and persisted between 1998 and 2009 before relaunching in 2014. The most recent game itself anchors its story in a fantasy steampunk world laden with attributes akin to the Victorian and Middle Ages, with central focus on Garrett, a master thief who returns to his old home bearings in The City, now intent on using his stealth and purloin skills against the villainous tyrant known as the Baron. If you love action movies, you pretty much know who late actor Charles Bronson was and most likely through his popular role as the notorious vigilante following the 1974 hit novel adaptation, Death Wish. The film which starred Bronson as a New York City architect cornered into taking the law into his own hands for the death of his wife and rape of his daughter, led to a successful five-film franchise before ending in 1994 prior to Saw and Furious Seven helmer James Wan’s own loose revisit with the 2007 Kevin Bacon actioner, Death Sentence. Traverse the internet long enough and you’ll likely find actor Keanu Reeves shooting up a gun range. Such training is required for someone like Reeves whose latest foray into the action genre involves a sick load of gun play and fisticuffs as a vengeful hitman in Lionsgate’s John Wick. The sequel is seuging into the next phase of production for the sequel newly titled John Wick: Chapter Two, and Reeves himself is out and about sharing a thing or several about where the film will go. Via IGN, the actor himself describes the film as a “third degree blackbelt” in essence with respect to the ensuing action for the story that now evolves our title character on his journey from the streets of New York City to Rome, Italy. Oddly enough, action film legend Sammo Hung’s latest is undergoing a small identity crisis through its titling. Initially it was The Bodyguard and as of late, it was retitled My Beloved Bodyguard through some of the latest stills that have been pouring out in the past week or so, although hopefully this won’t at all affect the rollout on April 1 when it opens as either title from Edko Films, Ltd. At any rate, Hung is guarding something! Here he plays a retired old soldier living on the Russia-China border who befriends a young girl and ultimately sets out to rescue her when her father gets mixed up with the wrong people. Donovan Marsh To Direct Gerard Butler In HUNTER KILLER This July

South African crime thriller, iNumber Number (a.k.a. Avenged), landed a great spotlight on director Donovan Marsh in 2013 prior to the film’s remake rights acquisition by Universal Pictures the following year. Nowadays, the award-winning filmmaker is expected to pick back up on his craft on July 25 in London when he returns to the director’s chair for the long-gestating film adaptation, Hunter Killer. The film has quite an enduring development history while at the then-branded Relativity Media as things got contentious between CEO and founder Ryan Kavanaugh and producer Neal Moritz who intially fought to remove the film from its hold at Relativity. Up for seeing director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad this August? You’ll be happy to know that he and actor Will Smith are more than happy to follow through according to the latest trade reports citing a new film in development titled Bright. The film, which Ayers may direct and joins Smith with actor Joel Edgerton, is described as a cop thriller with fantasy elements such as orcs and fairies with a story led by a unique protagonist in the form of an orc cop. It’s wicked stuff and it should garner some interest over time while we await to see which studio it lands with CAA shopping it following its approval as one of 13 titles by the California State Comission, nailing a $7.2 million tax credit in the process. The pressure was on for director J.J. Abrams in the months leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and lo and behold, the efforts have been met with praise, and a gross thusfar of well over $2 billion dollars globally in ticket sales. As for the film, well…things happened, people died and Rey herself, played by actress Daisy Ridley, ended up with lightsaber skills of her own thus bringing a new heroine into the mix (despite initially being shortchanged her own toy in her likeness). I remember when filmmaker Paul Feig’s reboot of the horror comedy franchise, Ghostbusters, was met with a bit of brouhaha from some fanboys who weren’t very keen on seeing an all-female line-up. Gladly, those voices have gladly been silenced over the past year lest the rest of us endure any further noise on that end, because let’s be very clear about something: Feig knows what he’s doing when it comes to comedy and he does a great job honing in on it. He did so last year with actress Melissa McCarthy in Spy which was my first sampling of his work. It’s happening, and with Snow White And The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders in the director’s chair while the film itself continues to be a center of curiosity for fans of the franchise everywhere regarding its casting.
