Long after the acclaim of last year’s Indonesian film prospects with horror thriller, Killers and action crime sequel, The Raid 2, it comes with great pleasure to finally see more coming out of the woodworks from the other side of the globe. Indeed it was Killers co-helmer Timo Tjahjanto who was poised to direct the currently-shelved gangster thriller, The Night Comes For Us with the involvement of fellow cohorts Gareth Huw Evans and action star Iko Uwais doing principal fight choreography. It’s been a lesson well learned for upcoming actor and fight choreo Leroy Nguyen in the years he’s operated online via his indie film banner, Rising Tiger Films – more so following the festival of his latest indie action drama short, Black Scar Blues. The project is four years in the making with up-and-coming actress Queen Sayat joining Nguyen and Rising Tiger staple Edmond Shum in a story focused two drug runners whose enduring friendship is ultimately tested in the wake of greed, lust and unmitigated ambition. Following its Japan release last year, Drafthouse Films is bringing Kamikaze Girls and Confessions helmer Nakashima Tetsuya‘s latest, The World Of Kanako, to the U.S. on December 4. The film is based on author Fukamachi Akio’s 2005 novel and with reviews glossing all over the sheer madness of what’s included, I’d say the latest trailer justly encompasses the hype. You would think that a film like Gavin O’Connor‘s latest, Jane Got A Gun would have an easier time getting a foothold. Alas, it took three years to start with were it not for director Lynne Ramsay totally bailing on the film altogether at the last minute, along with the revolving door turning of added cast. Thankfully what we now have is a finished product, and what better way to deliver it other than with acclaimed actress Natalie Portman front and center? Mark your calendars this week! The looming production of the upcoming sequel to this year’s Kingsman: The Secret Service is currently in bound with activity in Europe as we speak, and with no less than actor Taron Egerton poised to reprise his lead role as well. With all other updates pending, the movie is officially releasing on June 16, 2017 with a plot centric on the story previously following a young troubled thief who etches his way up the ladder to becoming a top superspy for the British government. Actor Tom Cruise‘s most recent success in Paramount Pictures’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation marks an opportune milestone for the studio. Its 2012 adaptation of the Lee Child-written Jack Reacher novels drew some attention but almost didn’t reach sequel potential, so thankfully for fans of the film there’s been enough interest in one with the help of ancillary sales and overseas markets. As such, cue the latest announcement following the past year of brewing development on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, with a press release signaling production as of Tuesday this week. The film bodes as a contemporary action classic featuring White in the story of an ex-con who sets out to fulfill a promise, ultimately finding himself taking on a syndicate that rules a tough underground fight club. It was about a month or so ago that Lionsgate and Saban announced they began testing actors for the upcoming 2017 tokusatsu reboot, Power Rangers. The show has gone on for well over two decades crossing over Japanese sci-fi and fantasy lore to North American TV audiences in 1993 and since moving into Hollywood territory with at least two films in 1995 and 1997. The two companies announced the reboot in May of 2014 long prior to finally attaching a director in the form of Earth To Echo helmer Dean Israelite with a release date currently stamped for January 13, 2017. I don’t know about anyone else, but I would like to think that the concept of the classic Rocky character, Apollo Creed, eventually had children who could later forsee an entrance into the Rocky saga. This is at least one thing mentioned in the latest featurette for the upcoming spin-off, Creed, reuniting star Michael B. Jordan with director Ryan Coogler, now joining franchise mainstay Sylvester Stallone who co-stars. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer may be busy working on the Pirates Of The Carribean franchise ahead of the long awaited Top Gun sequel, but that hasn’t stopped him from nabbing more to work with ahead of then. The latest events over at the Frankfurt Book Fair last week proved pivotal for Bruckheimer in the wake of author S. Bergstrom’s latest self-published 2014 debut YA novel, The Cruelty, which is reportedly now underway at Paramount with the former Disney producer now in possession of the rights. There’s no question about it. J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens is probably going to break the box office as much as it already broke the internet on Monday. I have no doubts here in any regard though I can imagine Disney and Lucasfilm are just eagerly waiting to start counting the money. For now, we’re counting views and tonight will probably be a huge night for sci-fi nerds only just discovering Monday Night Football upon the release of the new trailer, doing some sure ratings justice for ESPN. Signaled by none other than the upworthy reception of his latest underground fight drama, Callajero, writer and director Ray Gallardo‘s prospects are looking quite exceptional. His newest production, Cafe Con Leche, took off earlier this year on location in the federal district of Mexico City and caught my attention as well with the addition of actor and fight choreographer Fernando Jay Huerto. Roughly twenty-two days is what I’m told it took to finish this one. AMC Network’s latest jewel of a television series, Into The Badlands, is gearing up for a November 15 premiere, and the expectations are far from disappointing. So we have a slew of TV spots until then and it’s understandable how some might not be so eager to view them so as to abstain from spoilage. Alas, pay no mind to this latest 30-second promo featuring glorious glimpses of high-flying and kinetic martial arts action featuring Daniel Wu as a repenting agent of death. I haven’t much kept up with the Resident Evil movies apart from having seen four of them so far. The sixth, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, is underway, at least with production currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa with actress Milla Jovovich back with an ensemble cast of familiar faces based on characters from the hit Capcom gaming series. One such character is now being added by way of South Korean actor and singer Lee Joon-Gi, according to Variety. The latest trailer for Wuershan’s Mojin: The Lost Legend is currently circulating online with tons of promise. Headlined with a stellar cast led by actress Shu Qi, the film encircles a story set in the 80’s about a former soldier, his partner, and an American archeologist who fall victim to a curse while infiltrating an ancient grave. IMAX Corporation unveiled a press release last week on October 14 announcing the film’s IMAX release and theatrical date which you may read about below, though I imagine this one is being groomed for a release overseas as well, in which case, let’s hope!
