The last five years have been terrific in keeping up with actor and martial artist Jean-Paul Ly. A career comprised of nominal stunt performance and small roles that eventually paved the way for his stellar reception in Jailbreak now brings us front and center with Magpie and Colin helmer Marc Price, whose name became central to the posterity of martial arts cinema back in late 2017 with UK production, Nightshooters.
Director Marc Price’s new action comedy thriller, Nightshooters, is officially on deck for DVD release and Digital Download in the UK on December 26. The film, which stars SAG-Nominated rising martial arts star, Jean-Paul Ly (Jailbreak), will first have its day vying for Best UK feature’ at this year’s Raindance Film Festival in October.
UPDATE (3:35pm EST): I’ve been told that home release date for Nightshooters has been pushed back again. The move marks a second delay following an initial July release that preceded a September 10 date. A new release date will arrive following its in-competition premiere in October.
Bringing solid martial arts action to the forefront of cinema is always a game of patience and endurance. SAG-nominated rising star Jean-Paul Ly knows this full well having committed for nearly a decade to keeping the genre alive in stunts, and ultimately, acting.
2018 is the year that things continue taking shape in post-Jailbreak fashion for rising martial arts action star Jean-Paul Ly. Alas, there he is, splashed front and center in all his glory for the martial arts crowd for Colin helmer Marc Price’s new movie Nightshooters.
NIGHTSHOOTERS is a non-stop action-thriller about a group of filmmakers who find themselves on the run from a violent mob of criminals, after witnessing a brutal gangland execution. Unable to escape their set, the hapless film crew must use their technical skill and cinematic knowledge to survive.
As the hoods draw near to eradicate all witnesses, stunt man Donnie (Jean-Paul Ly) is forced to take his martial arts capabilities off script, putting his skills to practice for survival. The sound team resourcefully use their equipment to track their surroundings as the special effects guru disregards all the rules of set, abandoning safety to set lethal traps as the cat and mouse game of survival ensues!
The Ascendant Releasing launchpad is slated for a hopeful film festival rollout this summer while plans cuttently include a select theatrical and On Demand UK release on July 27 followed by Blu-ray & DVD issues August 13. UK outlet Flickering Myth was graced with a presentation of the first official trailer now online and in red-band form bolstered with rousing comedy and a tease of some of the best, kinetic fight thrills and spills brought to the screen.

The U.K. is well on its way toward a July release for Marc Price’s upcoming martial arts thriller, Nightshooters. Market news is also abound for the film’s appeal overseas which now brings us word that Lightining Entertainment has announced its international acquisition of the film which wrapped last month Ascendant Releasing following its announcement in November.
“We’re delighted to be working with Lightning Entertainment on NIGHTSHOOTERS. They immediately saw the same potential in Marc Price’s vision for the film that we did, and they’re the perfect partners for this. We hope this is the first of many collaborations between us” says Bart Ruspoli of Ascendant.
Leading the cast is actor and martial artist, SAG nominated Jean-Paul Ly with a story centered on a film crew that lands in danger after witnessing a violent criminal act during an evening production. Ly’s ascending career in stunts and fight choreography eventually paved the way to his debut role in Jimmy Henderson’s Cambodian action comedy, Jailbreak which became a local hit and a smashing success throughout the international festival circuit.
“Lightning are thrilled to be working with such a talented and exciting team on internationally award-winning director Marc Price’s third film.” says Lighting’s Andrew Brown – Head Of Sales. “Together with Jean-Paul Ly, touted as one of the biggest action stars of his generation, and a fantastic cast, the team have delivered a stunning blend of superb martial arts action with the very best of a British gangster film!”
Ly is joined by actors Doug Allen and Nicholas Aaron among the cast.
U.K. Martial Arts Thriller NIGHTSHOOTERS Kicks Off Into The New Year With Completion And A New Production Still
The implementation of stunt players to the profession of forefront acting and even starring in narrative features continues to reap prosperity in some instances. U.K.-based Jean-Paul Ly’s case certainly makes note of this having graced market floors and festival audiences with the release of his acting debut in Jimmy Henderson’s Jailbreak – a high mark for Cambodian cinema as well as for Ly’s own career traction.
That effort continues now in Ly’s current stomping grounds with U.K. director Marc Price for the upcoming action thriller, Nightshooters, from which both director and star among others have been slowly rolling out photos teasing the new martial arts pic in wake of its official completion this week. Just as he did on Jailbreak, the rising star also serves as action director along with fight supervisor Donovan Louie, hailing the story of a film crew who find themselves on the run from a criminal gang after witnessing a violent act.
Also starring are Doug Allen, Nicholas Aaron and Adam McNab along with an action team comprised of Kamikaze star and director Marcus Shakesheff, and action performers Hung Dante Dong, Eddie Rafiki Lee, Jon Alagoa, Danny Darwin, Michael Lagin, Tom Cotton, Lucy Jayne Murray, Axel Nu and Karanja Yorke. The film, rolling out this year from U.K.-based Ascendant, is expect to open this summer, so as with photos like the one above, keep an eye out for a fantastic teaser very soon!

We are still some time away from further news of Jimmy Henderson’s hit thriller, Jailbreak, as it currently circulates exclusive event screenings before a release in the U.S. and U.K. among other territories. In the meantime, its key cast member, actor and martial artist Jean-Paul Ly is advancing with a cast and crew led by Colin and Magpie helmer Marc Price for the new U.K. action production, Nightshooters, which goes before cameras in November.
Exclusive news at Filmoria broke this week reporting that Ascendant Releasing, a new U.K. distribution upstart from Bart Ruspoli and Freddie Hutton-Millshas, has acquired international sales rights to the film currently aiming for a U.K. Summer theatrical release in 2018. Casting and other details for the film remain otherwise pending aside from Ly who will reportedly play Donnie, a stuntman leading a film crew who happen to stumble upon a gangland hit.
Producing is Michelle Parkyn with Ruspoli and Hutton-Mills serving as executive producers alongside Ian Kirk whose White Hot Productions is fully financing the film.
[Says Price]: “With this film we’re hoping to create some of the best action UK independent cinema has seen. A UK equivalent of The Raid with a healthy splash of the fragmented, humorous characters I’ve always connected with.
“We have a great cast as well as a spectacular fight team who have already knocked my socks off with their skill and ability to create the kind of action I’ve always fantasized about filming since my first introduction to Hong Kong cinema as a teenager.”
Producer Michelle Parkyn: “With Marc’s reputation for creating amazing films without spending millions, not to mention our world-class action team, I’m hugely excited to see just how far we can push Nightshooters.”
Ly also directed the action with director of photography Godefroy Ryckewaert in Jailbreak with fellow lead cast Dara Our also serving as choreographer; Both actors along with professional kickboxer and actress Tharothoum Sam, and debut actress Celine Tran for its January release in local Cambodian cinemas. Produced by Loy Te at Kongchak Pictures, the film won big at Fantasia Festival, attaining the GURU Prize (Gold) for Best Action Feature Film, as well as the Bronze Prize for Most Innovative Feature Film, the film credited in whole “for its inspired fight and camera choreography” as well as invoking “a rare and innovative alchemy between camera and cast, that transforms the operator from observer to literal combatant.”
Ly’s film and television credits as actor and stuntman also include – but are not limited to – Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist (2014), Now You See Me 2 (2016), BBC Three sitcom Cuckoo, Marvel’s Doctor Strange (2016) and David Newton’s 2017 feature debut, Amber, starring Jack Jagodka.
‘We believe the combination of Marc Price and Jean Paul Ly will bring about serious competition to the likes of ‘The Raid’ franchise and ‘Jailbreak’ and we’re incredibly excited to be a part of it” says Ruspoli.
