Donnie Yen Hits The Ground Running With Two Projects At Superhero Films

According to reports gathered at Twitch, international martial arts action superstar and entrepreneur Donnie Yen will have two films lined up at the start of his latest film venture over at Superhero Films. The newly founded production company has already begun pre-production on The Master, which is set to star Yen in a 1970’s story about a gun shop owner bent on vengeance against a kung fu master who emigrates from Hong Kong. The film will see Yen returning to the set once again with director Pou-Soi Cheang, whose works include Shamo, Dog Bite Dog, and the upcoming 3D fantasy actioner, The Monkey King, also starring Yen. The next film is called Dragon City, also set to star Yen as a 1970’s cop in charge of a special crime fighting task force assigned to battle corruption within the Kowloon Walled City. Today there are new reports out featuring the first promotional photos for the upcoming directorial debut of Keanu Reeves‘s latest martial arts action film, Man Of Tai Chi, courtesy of Chinese online periodical, QQ. The film, based on a screenplay by Michael G. Cooney, is a co-production from China Film Group, Wanda Group and Village Roadshow Pictures will also feature Reeves opposite lead actor Tiger Hu Chen in his first starring role. Yuen Woo-Ping is the film’s action director, along with Chad Stahelski and Jon Valera designing and coordinating the fights. The film will also star Karen Mok along with Iko Uwais, Jeremy Marinas, Steven Dasz and Brahim Achabbakhe and Ocean Hou. Lemore Syvan and Daxing Zhang are producers. Filmmaker Toshiyaki Toyoda aims to please fans of Japanese cinema with the upcoming 2014 release of Crows Explode. The film is the third installment of the film franchise that began in 2007, based on the hit manga series created by Hiroshi Takahasi. The recent announcement came prior to filming, which began on April 2, 2013, with an expected 2014 release. Park Hoon-Jung's NEW WORLD Comes To Sony

Deadline has reported that Sony has acquired the rights to remake the South Korean action crime drama, NEW WORLD, for American audiences. The remake will be produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Jon Silk, and written by Will Fetters (A Star Is Born, Crazy For The Storm). The news comes less than a month after North American distribution company theatrically released the film in March. The South Korean actioner was nominated twice at the Baeksang Arts Awards for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The film stars Lee Jung-jae, Choi Min-shik and Hwang Jung-min and produced by Min-jung Park, Hyun-woo Kim, Jae-Duk Han and Woo-Taek Kim. Jefusion recently forwarded a new live-action teaser for the upcoming sci-fi fantasy thriller, Gatchaman. The news comes seven years after a GG-animated feature film was announced in 2006, but failed to move forward with it after Astro Boy flopped at the box office, which led to an eventually settled lawsuit between Imagi and the franchise’s creator, Tatsunoko, who began the franchise in the 1970’s with director by Hisayuki Toriumi. Universal Pictures is stopping at nothing to fast-track the production of Fast And Furious 7 as we are a little over a month away from seeing actors Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reunite with its ensemble cast in the May 24 release of Fast And Furious 6. As a result, director Justin Lin, who has been with the series since the franchise’s third installment, The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, declined to helm the seventh installment, which is currently slated for an April 2014 release. The Point Break Remake Has Acquired Itself A Director

Deadline is reporting this week that cinematographer Ericson Core will direct the upcoming remake of the 1991 blockbuster action rush feature flick, Point Break. The news comes a little over a year and a half after Alcon Entertainment announced it required the rights in 2011, then issuing a press release: Alcon principals Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson secured rights to the project the week of the original film’s 20th anniversary from RGM Media, John McMurrick and Chris Taylor. Kosove and Johnson will produce along with Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Kurt Wimmer (“Salt,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” upcoming “Total Recall”), who also wrote the screenplay. Parameswara Arts is releasing a new Telugu, brutal martial arts action film on May 10, 2013, produced by Bandla Ganesh called Iddarammayilatho (roughly translated as “With Two Girls”), in new reports from several sources including Times Of India and Twitch. The film comes from writer/director Puri Jagannadh in his second project with actor Allu Arjun who stars as a youngster who, as per the title, falls in love with two women, played by Amala Paul and Catherine Tresa. Five years in the making, writer, producer and director Wong Kar-Wai’s latest cinematic entry into the history of Ip Man movies, The Grandmasters, will finally see its way to a bigger audience in the latest circulated report from City On Fire via Indiewire and Exhibitor Relations. The reports indicates The Weinstein Company has acquired the rights to distribute the film, and has set an official wide release date for August 23, 2013. The film, stars Tony Leung Ka-Fai, Zhang Ziyi, Song Hye-kyo and Chang Chen, with a screenplay co-written by Wong, along with Zou Jingzhi and Xu Haofeng, and produced by Megan Ellison and Ng See-Yuen, with action choreography by Yuen Woo-Ping. A new poster has gone viral this week for the upcoming Japan April 26, 2013 premiere of the new Takashi Miike film from Warner Bros. Japan, Shield Of Straw. The film is executive produced Seiji Okuda, Hiroyoshi Koiwai, produced by Misako Saka, Maeda Shigeji, and written by Tamio Hayashi, based on a 2004 crime novel by Kazuhiro Kiuchi. It stars Takao Osawa (Sky High, Goemon) and Nanako Matsushima (The Ring) as detectives from the Fukuoka Prefectural Police who are hired to protect a murder suspect played by Tatsuya Fujiwara (Battle Royale) when he discovers a 1 billion yen bounty on his head by the victim’s grandfather, a powerful figure in the financial world.
