Netflix Takes Center Stage At SDCC 2016 With DAREDEVIL, LUKE CAGE, IRON FIST, THE DEFENDERS

The work of building Marvel’s film and television universe continues for Netflix with the goal of inching further toward its much more grander ensemble series, The Defenders. For this, attendees at Comic Con International: San Diego got some fantastic news as did the rest of the internet with the announcement of a third season of the Charlie Cox-led Daredevil, as well as the first teaser poster and footage of Iron Fist starring Finn Jones. WHEELMAN: Netflix Acquires Worldwide Rights To Jeremy Rush’s New Frank Grillo Action Headliner

Last week’s announcement of director Jeremy Rush’s newest action flick, Wheelman, took shape finally at Cannes with word that dominant streaming video service, Netflix, has officially secured the film’s global rights. Some exhibitors feel threatened by the company’s proliferation following recent efforts toward day-and-date releases, but it’s happening nonetheless and those with Netflix aren’t hugely stressing the matter. It does make you wonder about the theatergoing experience though, and hopefully this doesn’t have a lasting and negative effect. We’ll see. THE PUNISHER Will Return To Netflix!

Well, it only took a little over three months, but now it appears Marvel is *officially* officially confirming the development of a Punisher spin-off series for Netflix. A show had been brewing for a while now with reports speculating its possibility until news broke in January that one would be happening before Marvel’s Head Of Television, Jeph Loeb tried walking it back a month later. Taking notes from shows like Law & Order and The Wire to layer up its comic book-layered thematic storytelling, the first season of the Marvel series adaptation, Daredevil, proved uniquely entertaining, as well as fundemental in realizing how studios and directors could better flesh-out superhero source material. A final trailer has arrived for the February 26 U.S. release of Yuen Woo-Ping’s latest, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny.
