BANG BANG!: Full Of Fireworks And Quirky Romance Anytime Of The Day
Director James Mangold’s 2010 action spy romcom, Knight & Day, was nothing special when I went to see it, but it nonetheless guaranteed a considerably good time at the movies. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz worked awesomely together in the story formatted from Patrick O’Neil’s script, and so to see it remade via Bollywood, while nothing new in this day and age, still drew my curiousity. Hence, Siddharth Anand‘s 2014 adaptation, Bang Bang! arrived, and it’s actually my first dig at a film like this from an Indian production, music videos and all.
The film takes its cues from its 2010 predecessor here with actress Katrina Kaif as the meek and stoic Harleen, dealing day-in and day-out with the woes of being a lovelorn and single bank receptionist. Following this, she desperately arranges an online date at a restaurant in order to find true love, and instead, greets a man she mistakes for her date, and just moments later, a chance moment of romance veers into a series of life-and-death decision-making situations; Rajveer, played by Krrish franchise star, actor Hrithik Roshan, is an international criminal wanted in connection with the theft of the Kohinoor, a priceless Indian jewel from London, one being sought after by the elusive terrorist, Omar Zafar, played by Danny Denzongpa, after escaping government captivity.
With the Kohinoor in Rajveer’s possession and both sides of the law hot on his tail, Harleen is unwittingly swept into a globetrotting cat and mouse game with Rajveer as her own means of protection, dodging bullets and often taking baddies out with them, much to Harleen’s chagrin. As their journey together progresses, Harleen struggles with questions of trust that weigh-in heavily on her unsure feelings about just who Rajveer is with relentless government official, Zorawar, played by Pawan Malhotra, in close pursuit. Soon enough though, Harleen’s own intuition brings her closer to unraveling the mysteries of Rajveer’s past, a move which not only draws her further in danger with the odds ever increasing, but at long last brings Rajveer closer to completing the true nature of his daring mission.
Being my first rodeo into Bollywood territory, I found myself enjoying this a lot more than I expected. The story is packed with a spectacular sweeping views of global locales headlines by a very charming on-screen romance between Roshan and Kaif along with their shared and respective musical numbers.
Much like the film’s numerous glam shots of sexy actress Kaif and a shirtless Roshan for good measure, the film wastes almost no time showcasing Denzongpa’s compelling performance as the film’s nefarious villain along with Javed Jaffrey opposite actor Jimmy Shergill‘s cameo, setting the tone just perfectly for the rest of the film. The principle action, while in its modest share of moments more sillier than others, was far more fantastic than expected, and delightfully performed by Roshan who reportedly trained immensely for his stunts, even upon overcoming an on-set injury prior to surgery to remove a blood clot from his head.
The film is well acted by its supporting cast, namely actress Kamlesh Gill in the key role of Dadi, Harleen’s grandmother. Herein lies the core of much of the story’s comedic impetus as it segways into Harleen’s rollercoaster romance and pantomime with Rajveer between the drama and action, all leading up to a dramatic and explosive finale that does a sure bit of justice to its earlier precursor from Mangold.
As far as the musical interludes are concerned, those didn’t bother me much. Point in fact, out of the two or three there were, my favorite song from the film is its first track, “Tu Meri” in which Rajveer initially romances his way into Harleen’s heart following a pertinent and intimate conversation about living each day like it was the last – a subtext that plays applicably well throughout the film. All in all, Bang Bang! was a blast for me and I recommend it to anyone who genuinely loves a good action movie musical.

The New Trailer For KICK Is 'Too Much Fun'!
Quality is a keyword nowadays with Bollywood action seemingly upping the ante with their films in tremendously epic fashion, with big scale fights, stunts explosions and the usual musical numbers to boot. Such is the case with director Sajid Nadiadwala off the heels of debuting actor Tiger Shroff in last month’s release of romantic action thriller, Heropanti, and now promoting his newest offering, Kick, a remake of the 2009 romantic action thriller of the same name centered on a cat mouse game between a cop and a thrill-seeking professional thief.
The new trailer dropped over the weekend ahead of its native holiday release next month on July 25, and stars actor Salman Khan and actress Jacqueline Fernandez.
WARRIOR Prepares A Hindi Remake With Lionsgate
The martial arts action genre continues to play heavily in India’s highly productive market despite anyone’s notice of these films beyond their borders. So, it still a delightful surprise to see such films come about, and much to the chagrin of some critics, that includes remakes which are pretty typical in Indian cinema as directors sometimes remake their own films or that of other directors, local or abroad.
In this instance, we take the name Gavin O’Connor whose 2011 feature-length mixed martial arts drama, Warrior, was a critical hit, but flopped in the U.S.. This week, that film falls at at the feet of Bollywood writer and director Karan Malhotra for the Hindi remake with lead actor Sidharth Malhotra (pictured above) and potential addition, action hero Akshay Kumar respectively portraying the roles previously played by Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton.
The original film’s distributors at Lionsgate are producing the remake with Endemol India to retell the story that previously featured fight choreography by J.J. Perry (Haywire, The Expendables 3) and centered on Hardy and Edgerton as two brothers, one a former Marine and the other a former UFC fighter-turned-schoolteacher, on opposite ends of a three-way family rift stemmimg from their abusive childhood at the behest of their father, played by Nick Nolte. Driven by their own motives, the two brothers eventually find themselves competing in the same mixed martial arts tournament with the grand prize of 5 million dollars to the winner.
In my opinion, not a lot of people are very familiar with Indian action cinema as it gets overlooked by a lot of other films from Hollywood, Hong Kong and the like. But with Lionsgate helping out the project, we’ll see how much publicity this one gets in the states. Granted it might gain its footing mostly with filmgoers familiar with Bollywood cinema, but it could go as far as the film festival circuit in North America much like Vidyut Jammwal’s 2013 hit, Commando, and grow its audience from there. But, time will tell.
In the meantime, Malhotra is currently expected to dazzle audiences at home with director Mohit Suri’s latest romantic murder thriller, Ek Villain, which releases natively on June 27. Check out the trailer below!

The martial arts cinema genre is still fair game anywhere around the world, including the inner-circles of Bollywood cinema, an industry that is said to produce out up to a good thousand films per year. A bastian of fitness, avid Bruce Lee fan and son of veteran actor Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff, Tiger has driven some pretty huge buzz in the past few years as the next big thing despite being a fresh face. And as of late, Tiger‘s made himself pretty busy promoting his new film, even so far as giving live performances with his team to illustrate the authenticity of his skill set without wires.
Directed by Sabbir Khan, Heropanti stands to be the first of two films starring Tiger in his first move to the big screen with producer Sajid Nadiadwala, leaving a little something more for action fans to expand their fanfare with their favorite genre.

The Trailer For HOLIDAY Brews Quirky Romance With A Touch Of Energizing Action
The task of keeping up with the pacing of movie production in Southeast Asia, particularly in India, can be pretty challenging. As it stands, the industry over there tends to generate close to a thousand of these films every year, including some pretty big actioners, with the quality, size and scale of stuntwork almost consistently increasing with each film, a trend that sites pretty normal for bonafide action hero Akshay Kumar who happens to be a pretty big deal for his fanbase at home.
This summer, that trend continues with the latest action romance drama from director A.R. Murugadoss titled Holiday, a remake of his 2012 feature, Thuppaki ( and also one of three known remakes of the same film to date) which now sees Kumar in the lead as a military captain whose short-lived vacation puts him back in the line of fire against terrorist cells. As per the usual caveats of Bollywood cinema, the film bares its own share of colorful and lively song and dance. Fortunately, action film junkies do get their day as well, with Kumar in his element under Hollywood stunt coordinator Greg Powell (Fast And Furious 6, all Harry Potter films, The Avengers: Age Of Ultron). And judging by the most recent trailer which debuted in February, action fans shouldn’t be too worried.
Holiday also stars Sonakshi Sinha in her latest role with Kumar since the 2013 production of Boss, along with Freddy Daruwala who plays the villain. The film hits cinemas domestically on June 6.
SYNOPSIS:
Virat (Akshay Kumar) is among a battalion of military officers that comes to Mumbai on vacation. Virat is also a secret Defence Intelligence Agent who cannot lie low, much to the irritation of his friend and sub inspector. During a bus ride, an attempt to frisk passengers for a lost wallet leads Virat to something much bigger. Within minutes, the bus is blown into pieces and he helps cops nab the carrier of the bomb, who escapes from the hospital only to be caught by Virat again. Using tact, Virat follows one clue at a time hoping to track down the terrorist on whose orders the sleeper cell terrorists plan to cause mayhem in Mumbai.
